Rest




The LORD is my shepherd;
       I shall not want.
     He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
         He leads me beside the still waters.
 He restores my soul;
         He leads me in the paths of righteousness
         For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD
Forever.

 
These verses have been on my mind and heart for a couple of weeks now.  I was teaching a study on the names of God. When I got to Jehovah-Rapha, the Lord Is My Shepherd, I was struck by how perfect Psalm 23 really is.

First of all, those first nine words are so awesome. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Because the Lord is my Shepherd, I don't want for anything.  Park there a moment.  Dwell on this fact. 


In the natural, a Shepherd provides everything the sheep needs.  He shelters them, protects them, provides for them, leads and guides. All the sheep have to do is follow.


Spiritually speaking, it's the same deal with us.  If we are obedient to the great Shepherd, His promise to us is that we won't want.  If we truly believe that, we don't have anything to worry about!  And if you are not worried, then your heart is at rest.

Is there something you need?  The Shepherd provides shelter, food and water for the sheep.  He anoints them (gives them medicines ... or you could look at it as health and beauty aids).  The sheep trust Him to provide what they need.  God promises you won't see "... the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." (Psalm 37:25) You can rest knowing your Shepherd will provide!


You don't know the path to take? Come sit at the Shepherd's feet.  He promises to lead you in paths of righteousness - the path of right standing.  What better place could you be?  The bible says, "A good man's steps are ordered by the Lord" (Psalm 37:23) If you are trusting the Lord, and doing what you feel He is leading you to do, then you have no worries. Everything will be all right, you can rest.

I've heard some say, "What if I mess up and take the wrong path?" Honey, He is Big enough that He can get you back into that right path!

What if you are facing physical danger?  Nestle close to the Shepherd. He will protect you and you will fear no evil.  You can rest knowing He is on the job.


Have you been treated unfairly? Take it to your Shepherd.  You shall not want for justice. He says, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay."  (Romans 12:9) He will take care of it, you can rest knowing it's His problem now.

I'm so thankful for God's Word.  I love it so much that He promises that I shall not want.  Then He caps it off by telling me that goodness and mercy are going to follow me around forever!  A sheep can't ask for more than that!

No need to worry or fret ... no need for stress ... you can rest!


I wrote this devotional for my series, Words to Stand On.  I felt it also tied in with the theme at Thankful Thursday this week.  Iris at Grace Alone wrote of being thankful for vacation.  I began thinking about how a vacation is supposed to be a time of rest (although often we are glad to be back from vacation to get some rest!) RD12 for September 29, 2010




1. Do you believe, somewhere deep inside, that blondes do indeed have more fun? That they are "dumber" than brunettes or redheads? Be honest! I just think that blondes attract more attention than anyone else.

2. Which animal would you most like to observe in its wild habitat? Let's see ... I'm trying to think which animal is native to Hawaii ...

3. This week the U.N. announced that Dr. Mazlan Othman has been appointed the official "Alien Ambassador," should any extraterrestrials contact us. Have you, or has anyone you know, ever seen a UFO? No

4. Name your favorite Hitchcock film.
I have always stayed away from "scary" movies, because they make me ... well ... scared.  I have never seen a Hitchcock film.  However, my brother loved that genre and saw everyone he could.  I remember he was particularly impressed with "The Birds," so if I were going to pick a favorite, I'd pick that.

5. Would you rather spend time at the library, the mall, a craft store or home? Hands down, I'd rather spend time at home.  It's good to be home! Next, it would be the library, then the craft store for places to spend time.  As for the mall, I only go when I have to, and for as little time possible.

6. Which Disney princess is your favorite? (Or Disney character, if you are a guy) I don't know if she is technically considered a princess, but Belle from Beauty and the Beast is my favorite.  We've only seen her story about a million times here in our household! [Music from the soundtrack still plays in my head today - at the oddest times!]

7. What kind of art is your favorite?
I love landscapes.

8. How do you feel about viral videos, that is, videos made by amateurs that end up on Youtube receiving thousands of hits? I think it's great - encourages creativity ... unless ... why is it called VIRAL?  Does it impart viruses to others?  If that is the case, then it's very very bad ...

9. Where do you buy your jeans? Wherever Gloria Vanderbilt stretch jeans are sold ... usually JC Penney's

10. Tell me about your first automobile accident. I was 17.  I came out of the house that morning to find my windows all frosted over.  I cleaned the front window, leaving the side and back windows alone.  When I got to the main road, I pulled out in front of a speeding truck because I could not see through the side window that it was coming. Suffice to say, I did not have electric windows, or I could have lowered them to look before turning out into the traffic. The force of the collision made the windshield look like a glass spider web.  But my old Dodge Coronet was built like a tank.  My dad took it to the body shop and it lived to run the roads for a long time after that.

11. Have you ever been honest when you knew you would benefit more if you would be dishonest?
I always try to be honest for two reasons, 1) I want to please God, and 2) if I attempted something dishonest, I would be caught immediately and, with my luck, publicly humiliated. It's just not worth whatever benefit I might think I'm getting.

12. If you were appointed "Ambassador to Aliens," what would you show and tell first about life on Earth? What would be the most difficult thing to explain? The first thing I would show would be a family and tell how that it is the first organization that God created.  The most difficult thing would be to explain how even though He created them and gave His life for them, most people don't believe in God .... Also difficult to explain:  how children can be so attached to a parent, even fight over who gets to sit next to mom or dad, and then about age 12, suddenly decide that being seen with a parent is totally lame! This aversion to a parent may last the next 6 to perhaps even 12 more years .... Just sayin'

The Simple Woman's Daybook - September 28, 2010



Usually, I try to join it at Peggy Hostetler's The Simple Woman's Daybook on Mondays to journal and plan my week. I fought a nasty virus all weekend, so today is the first day I felt even a stirring of energy.  I decided Tuesday is better than no day, so here is my contribution for this week:


FOR TODAY, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28

Outside my window... vehicles passing by on their way to work.  Soon, I'll be joining them.
I am thinking...how aggravating it is to have time at home, yet no energy to accomplish anything.
I am thankful for...sick day pay!
From the kitchen...I have to admit that I have no idea what I'm going to make for tonight's dinner!
I am wearing...one of my favorite outfits, gray slacks, gray, black and turquoise top, black cardigan and turquoise shoes.
I am creating...this month's newsletter at work
I am going...as few places as possible.  I need rest...
I am reading..."The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd
I am hoping... that I get two days work done in one!
I am hearing...my daughter drying her hair.
Around the house...the sound of silence (when the hair dryer is not going!)... it finally got cool enough to shut off the air conditioner!
One of my favorite things... my favorite comfy chair and ottoman to sit at when I don't feel well.
A few plans for the rest of the week: I'd like to get out my fall decor but my motivation is not quite there yet.

Cherry On Top Award


Heather at Becoming a Titus 2 Woman (Don't you just love the name of her blog?) has very kindly given me an award.  Heather is one of my newest followers and has a heart for her family.  Go check out her blog when you get a chance.  Thank you, Heather, for thinking of me!


Actually, I have received awards twice before, but here is what I found.  I would get the award and feel so honored that I was picked, but then I would say to myself, "tomorrow I will post about the award because today I'm in the middle of ____________." You get the picture, tomorrow never came.  So, when I saw Heather's thoughtfulness, I decided to sit right down at that minute and participate.  (I'm working to overcome my procrastination.)


These are the "Cherry on Top" Award rules:
  1. Answer this question:  If you had the chance to go back and change one thing in your life, would you and what would it be?
  2. Pick 6 people and give them this award. You then have to inform the person that they have gotten this award.
If you had the chance to go back and change one thing in your life, would you and what would it be?  I agree with Heather that the choices I have made have led into the woman I am today, so I don't think I would change many things.  But one thing I would do, and I speak now to the mothers of young children, "Train your children to help with household chores."

Here is where perfectionism reared it's ugly head:  When my girls were small, I didn't make them do much (translate that into "hardly anything.") Why? Because I could do it faster, better and more importantly, I didn't make the effort.  I had all kinds of excuses, "I work two jobs, I'm tired, I don't feel well, yada, yada, yada.  Then later, when they could have been a real help to me, I was regretting my choice.

Children naturally want to be your helper.  If I had played into that, I could be sitting pretty today!

You can bet someday, there will be some Nana's little helpers!  I learn from my mistakes!

1. Karyn, from Musings From  Me.  I love Karyn, she's a great mom and grandmother and I think we could be best buds if there weren't a country in between us.

2.  Melli from Insanity Prevails.  Melli brings a smile to my face every time I go to her blog.  She is priceless!

3.  Cindy from Trails of Hats'n Hospitalitea.  Cindy is one of my newest blogger friends.  She lives on the gorgeous Prince Edward Island that I have vowed to visit before I leave this world.  Go check her out and give her some love.

4. Susanne from Living to Tell the Story.  Susanne is another Canadian friend who I admire very much.  She runs a successful dayhome and I'm in awe of her talents.  I'm not that good with kids, so I appreciate anyone who is!

5. Karen from Hallelujah Anyhow.  Karen is a sweet and gentle spirit and I can count on her to comment back to me everytime!  I really appreciate that.  As you know, comments are what keeps bloggers posting and she is the best!

6.  Kathie from A Sparrow's Home.  For breathtaking photography, you want to visit her blog!  She is the one that fostered the burning desire to visit Prince Edward Island!

Friday's Fave Five #107



Ahhh... the end of another work week!  Fridays, how I love them!  I also love to participate in Susanne's Friday's Fave Five, an exercise that encourages us to look back and find five highlights of our week to share.

1.  My number one highlight this week has to be a new air conditioner.  You might ask, didn't you get a new air conditioner compressor for your van this summer?  Yes.  Yes, we did.  I'm not going to dwell on the unfairness that both my home and vehicle air conditioners needed to be replaced in the same year.  I'm just going to be thankful that we were able to do it.  Now, it's cool and comfortable in my house.  As a woman that sometimes suffers with hot flashes, this is veryyyy important! Added bonus:  this air conditioner is much quieter than our old one!

2.  Last bloom of the season:  Because of the terrible heat and little rain the last two months, I have not gotten too many blooms on my hibiscus bush.  Since it cooled down, I have one last perfect bloom:



3.  I've shared before how much I love decluttering and organizing.  I just don't have time to do it much. But this week, I managed to clean up my desk!  It looks so much better, I had to take a picture.  First, here is my desk BEFORE:


It's not all that bad, but cluttery.  Unfortunately, I'm a piler, not a filer!

4.  I ran across this scripture passage the other day, and it just spoke volumes to me: 

"And so we keep on praying for you, that our God will make you worthy of the life to which He called you.  And we pray that God, by His power, will fulfill all your good intendions and faithful deeds." 2 Thessalonians 1:11 The Message

When our class was studying 2 Thessalonians, I saw this verse and the first part of it really caught my attention "make you worthy of the life to which He called you."  That is my one aim and goal in this life.  But yesterday, I re-read it and the second half jumped out at me, "fulfill all your good intentions."  Wow!  This is my problem.  I'm just full of good intentions but the follow-through is terrible!  (It's kind of a family trait.) So, maybe, these promptings of things I should do to bless others (a.k.a. good intentions), is from God and HE will help me follow through on them if I ask for help.

Definitely food for thought ....

5.  New ceiling fan:  I almost forgot ... in our quest for cool and comfortable living, we replaced the ceiling fan in the bedroom as well as getting a new a/c.  The fan we had in there was a little $20 job from the Dollar Store bought years and years ago.  Now we have a gorgeous 52" fan that really puts out the air on top speed.  I'm in heaven!

Thankful Thursday - Care Packages



Today's Thankful Thursday topic chosen by our hostess, Iris from Grace Alone, is care packages.  Iris wrote about how receiving care packages from home lifted her spirits.  Her mother sends her things that she has chosen specifically for her, a treat that can only be found in her native land or a card with special sentiment.  Iris reminds us, "Remember: little care packages or notes can cheer up a friend."


This reminded me of a special tradition that some of you may participate in, "Secret Sisters" or it is sometimes called "Secret Pals."  A group of women would write on slips of paper their birthdays, anniversaries and favorite little treats.  The slips of paper would be drawn by each lady and the name on that paper was your secret sister.  Then each holiday and for their birthdays or anniversaries you were to get them some kind of small token or gift.  Also, you were to be offering up special prayers for the person all year long.  At the end of the year, a party would be held and the secret sister revealed.


Over the years, I have participated in "Secret Sisters" many times.  Today, I am reminded of one year in particular.  This sister went the extra mile for me.  I was always finding gifts, cards, and little momentos on my desk or in my mailbox.  I remember on St. Patricks day she left a bag of wintergreen Life Savors and a card propped up against the door to my office.  On July 4th, there was a blue star-shaped candy dish filled with Starlite peppermints.  (I still have the dish to this day.) Somehow, she overheard a conversation where I told of finding a crystal bowl at a yard sale.  At Christmas, I received a gorgeous brand-new crystal fruit bowl.. Little encouraging notes or cards came my way that year, sometimes when there was no occasion at all.  She was the world's best secret sister!

Friendship is a very beautiful gift, and I'm so thankful that the Lord has allowed friends in my life. It's also a responsibility to give back to those friends.  I have fallen short many times. I'm challenged to do better in this area.

As Iris said, little notes or packages can cheer up a friend.  Do you know someone that needs to be encouraged?  Why not drop a card in the mail to them today?  Sometimes just knowing that someone thought of you makes all the difference!

Yes, it takes effort and some expense.  But it's worth it.  (I'm challenging myself as well as my readers!) The Word says:  "a true friend sticks by you like family." (Proverbs 18:24 the Message) Ask Him how you can show support to your friends, today.

Random Dozen - Happy Fall




1. Have you, or has someone close to you, ever won an award for anything? No, we're pretty average people ...


2. Who is the nearest relative to you who has served in the US Military? I've had four uncles serve. My future son-in-law has just joined the army. He graduates boot camp in about a week.


3. Share something that stirs the patriotic spirit in you. I'm very patriotic and I feel patriotism rise up in me anytime I see the flag, or hear our national anthem or see any of our monuments.  Also, I get teary eyed whenever one of our athletes is on the podium at the Olympics and receives a medal!


4. Where are you in the birth order in your family? Do you think your "placement" made a difference in your personality?  I am a firstborn and I definitely have all the firstborn characteristics.  I do think birth order accounts for a lot.


5. Name one trait you hope you carry that was evidenced in your parents or grandparents.  My granny Violet loved everybody all the time.  I hope that I can always be as loving.


6. If female, do you prefer wearing a skirt or pants? If male, shirt and tie or polo?  Now that the style is to NOT wear pantyhose, I like wearing skirts best ... but in the winter, I mostly wear pants.

7. Approximately how many times do you wake during the night? What do you do to go back to sleep? I wake up one to two times a night, but I always go right back to sleep.  I just hit the pillow, close my eyes, and I'm out.  It's a gift ...


8. Share a favorite movie quote. The first thing that popped in my head when I read this question was "ET Phone Home."  I used to know some quotes from Napoleon Dynamite ( I work with youth pastors) but now I can't remember them.


9. What is your favorite Fall candle scent?  cinnamon


10. What is one Fall activity you're looking forward to? making chili and stews


11. Tell us about a pleasant surprise that happened to you recently. Our car insurance didn't go up when I thought it would.  We have 5 drivers on our policy, 3 of which are accident prone!


12. What was it like when you first met your in-laws-to-be? It was awkward.  I first met them at a family dinner that my finace invited me to attend.  He has four other siblings. There was so many loud conversations going on at the same time, it was very overwhelming.  I just sat there and marveled.

FOR TODAY, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2010

Outside my window
... a cool morning, just the way I like it.
I am thinking... of these words that I felt God impress upon me last night, "God will do whatever it takes to bring you into a right relationship with Him." I had been concerned about someone close to me.  I just felt that I had to once again place this person in God's hands and trust Him. 
I am thankful for...scripture that centers me and helps me to trust.  For example, Romans 8:28! "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
From the kitchen... crockpot barbecue.
I am wearing... khaki capris and a coral top.
I am creating... more photo collages.
I am going...to get my nails done after work. I hate to take the time to do it, but love how they look when they are finished!
I am reading... Lydia's Charm by Wanda Brunstetter ... still.
I am hoping... for an end to the heat!
I am hearing... hum of the fans working.
Around the house... laundry put up, everything in its place!  I wonder how long it will last?
One of my favorite things... a cool breeze
A few plans for the rest of the week: I'm thinking about going Saturday for one more time yard saling for the season.

Friday's Fave Five #106






I'm glad it's Friday, and time to participate in Friday's Fave Five. Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts this wonderful meme that encourages us to look back on our week and share five highlights.

1. The highlight of my week was my trip to Coldwater, MO, to participate in a women's retreat. We stayed at one of my friend's brother's hunting cabins DEEP in the woods.  I don't think I have ever been farther back in the woods ... as the old saying goes, "we were so far back in the woods, even the hoot owls don't hoot."

We drove a narrow path through some trees for what seemed miles:



until we arrived at an A-frame cabin surrounded by rocks, lots and lots of rocks:
It had a screened front porch that was awesome. Yes, it had sattelite TV!  (We didn't watch it, though.) Also, if you can see it, there was a BBQ grill mounted outside the porch.  You just opened back the screen, and there is your cookspace!

We slept on beds tucked up under the eaves.  During the night, it rained steadily. The raindrops hitting the metal roof lulled us into a deep sleep. 


The next day was beautiful.  I went down to the pond to take some photos. (You know how I love to take photos of water!)



I sat on the dock and took my shoes off and splashed in the water ... pond water is cold!  My feet turned blue!


They had a fish feeder in the pond.  They also had some big catfish.  One girl caught a catfish that was just huge.  The owner of the property said it was probably the grandaddy of the pond.



It was a lovely relaxing time.

2.  Even better, we had wonderful times of sharing the word and praise and worship.  Our new friend, Sister Barbara, shared with us a message Friday evening on being bruised.  Her key scripture was Luke 4:18:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,



I was priviledged to share a devotional Saturday on being careful what you say when trials come.  You can read my devotional here. All things considered, it was a great weekend getaway that didn't last nearly long enough.
 
3.  Coming home:  No matter how much I enjoy a trip away, I'm always glad to get back to my little nest. There's no place like home. I'm kind of excited because I'm  ready to get out my fall decor and do a little nest-fluffing.
 
4.  A leisurely week:  This week was wonderful in that I had no extra meetings, no deadlines at work, nothing extra crowding my schedule.  I was able to blog everyday!
 
5. Tag: You're It!

I have a new blogger friend Still Magnolia over at Karen's Korner and she tagged me with 8 questions....Here's how the tag works: Answer the following 8 questions, tag 8 friends, and have them answer 8 new questions.

Here are Still Magnolia's questions for me....and my responses:
 

1.  What is your favorite season and why? Spring, because it's not hot and I love all the trees turning green.
2.  Do you have a Bucket List and what is one thing you have on it? I don't have an actual list but one thing I've said that I want to do before I die is to visit Prince Edward Island.
3.  Do you go to Starbucks(or another coffee chain) and what is your favorite drink there? No, I don't go to coffee places - I'm addicted to sweet tea.
4.  What book are you currently reading(or just finished)? Wanda Brunstetter's "Lydia's Charm"
5.  Do you take pictures?  What kind of camera do you have and share a current picture with us! I'm really getting into taking photos.  I would love to have a Canon Powershot but right now I have a Kodak Easyshare. Here's a favorite picture I took this summer at Crab Orchard Lake:



6.  What is your favorite genre of music and favorite group, band, individual from that genre. I like several genres, but I guess my favorite is southern gospel.  It's hard to choose because I love so many groups, but I guess I'll say my all time favorite is Jeff and Sheri Easter.
7.  Where was your most favorite vacation and what made it your favorite? The time my dad took us to California.  It's my favorite because I have so many memories attached to it.
8.  What is your favorite thing to cook/prepare and share the recipe. Boy, Still Magnolia is making me work on these questions!  My favorite (and most easy) recipe to prepare is my brownie recipe.  This recipe seems popular wherever I take them.  I shared this recipe over at Balancing  Beauty and Bedlam's Tasty Tuesday Blog Party.  You can find the recipe here.

Thankful Thursday - Cooler Weather



Thankful Thursday is a weekly exercise in practicing thankfulness.  This month's hostess, Iris at Grace Alone, is thankful for cooler weather.  Me too!  Although I don't live in the desert like she does, I also suffer through July and August's heat.  I do not like to sweat! I do not like to even "glisten" as we Southern ladies like to say.

In thinking about thankfulness this week, I realized there are so many things that bring me joy. I have been blessed with many major things:  health, spouse, children, family and friends, wonderful jobs, many interests and passions.  I give the Lord praise for these blessings continually.

However, there are so many little joys and pleasures in this wonderful life! Things that add richness and color to our existence. I'm so thankful God did not make this world boring!  He gave it color, fragrance, variety  in all the species of plants and animals.  He made sunsets and rainbows!

This is not a new idea. Blogger Ann Voskamp has a  meme on Mondays called Multitude Monday, One Thousand Gifts that encourages readers to journal the gifts you are grateful for, from the big to the little.

She has inspired me to list some of my little joys:
  • California Raspberry nail polish from OPI.  It makes me smile.
  • Glimpses of wildflowers entangled with the weeds lining the roadside as I drive to work.  Today, there were flowers that were such a vibrant yellow!
  • The color yellow - I'm so glad God made it!
  • Blue hydrangeas - it just makes the world so pretty.
  • My favorite gold hoop earrings - they go with everything and as long as I've had them, they're still shiny!
  • Citrus - The fragrance when you peel an orange or slice into a lemon.
  • The flavor of an early morning cup of hot tea.
  • Gentle breezes - I love to be outdoors when the wind is blowing.
  • Chocolate - need I say more?
  • Memories - I have so many precious memories, experiences I wouldn't trade for a million dollars. My children's adorable baby voices (I can still hear them all these years later!)
  • Lip gloss
  • Crickets chirping
  • Trees - I never met a tree that I didn't like.
  • Splashing my feet as I sit on a dock on a lake
I could go on and on listing (and my regular readers know that I probably will continue). But I would like to leave you with this thought:

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." James 1:17

Every blessing, big or little comes from Him.  Thank you, Father!

Random Dozen for What Seems Like a Thousand Times ....


Our Random Hostess, Linda at 2nd Cup of Coffee, says it feels like she has been coming up with questions for the Random Dozen for the millionth time.  I haven't been participating since the beginning, so I guess it's my thousandth time ... Seriously, this is a fun little exercise that sometimes gets you thinking out of the box.  Join up here if you'd like to be random with us.


1. Do you do garage sales? If so, tell me about one great find. If not, tell me why not. Yes, I absolutely yard sale!  (Yard saling is a verb in my book.)  I have lots of favorite finds, but I guess my current fave is a pair of shutters I found for $5.  (Actually it was a bi-fold door that my hubby took apart to look like shutters.) He painted them for me and we glued on some wooden embellishments, then hung them on either side of my bedroom curtains.  It looks awesome!
2. Name the last thing you fixed. I fix dinner ... everything else is fixed by my incredible hubby.
3. Name your A) Favorite item of makeup OR B) Favorite tool A) eyeliner B) glue gun
4. Which room in your home needs organizing more than any other? Living room/office area
5. Which room could use re-decorating? We've repainted the whole house recently ... the kitchen could use some new curtains ...
6. Share something unique about your town. Our one claim to fame - we have a super-max prison.  (How sad is that?)
7. If you could send a one-sentence message to your great-grandchild, what would it be? It's worth everything to make Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior.
8. Do you Facebook? Yes
9. Describe your favorite shoes. Lets' see ... it's hard to narrow it down to one favorite ... I'll say my flip flops that are cheetah-colored material.  The sole is really comfy.
10. Do you listen to more talk radio or more music radio? What kind of station is it? Music radio, a southern gospel station.
11. How far would you travel for a really good (favorite) meal? I always dream about going to Memphis to Catfish Cabin which is 4 hours away, but really the farthest I go, just to go out to eat, is 50 miles.
12. If you were totally honest with yourself (and us) what should you probably be doing right now instead of blogging? I should be getting dressed for work ...

It Is Well

I want to share with you an amazing story about a unique woman.  Her story is found in the bible, in 1 Kings, chapter 4, verses 8-37, NCV:


One day Elisha went to the town of Shunem. A wealthy woman lived there, and she urged him to come to her home for a meal. After that, whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for something to eat.  9 She said to her husband, “I am sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of God. 10 Let’s build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by.”  11 One day Elisha returned to Shunem, and he went up to this upper room to rest. 12 He said to his servant Gehazi, “Tell the woman from Shunem I want to speak to her.” When she appeared, 13 Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tell her, ‘We appreciate the kind concern you have shown us. What can we do for you? Can we put in a good word for you to the king or to the commander of the army?’”    “No,” she replied, “my family takes good care of me.”  14 Later Elisha asked Gehazi, “What can we do for her?” Gehazi replied, “She doesn’t have a son, and her husband is an old man.”  15 “Call her back again,” Elisha told him. When the woman returned, Elisha said to her as she stood in the doorway, 16 “Next year at this time you will be holding a son in your arms!”  “No, my lord!” she cried. “O man of God, don’t deceive me and get my hopes up like that.”  17 But sure enough, the woman soon became pregnant. And at that time the following year she had a son, just as Elisha had said.  18 One day when her child was older, he went out to help his father, who was working with the harvesters. 19 Suddenly he cried out, “My head hurts! My head hurts!”  His father said to one of the servants, “Carry him home to his mother.”  20 So the servant took him home, and his mother held him on her lap. But around noontime he died. 21 She carried him up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and left him there. 22 She sent a message to her husband: “Send one of the servants and a donkey so that I can hurry to the man of God and come right back.”  23 “Why go today?” he asked. “It is neither a new moon festival nor a Sabbath.”   But she said, “It will be all right.”  24 So she saddled the donkey and said to the servant, “Hurry! Don’t slow down unless I tell you to.”   25 As she approached the man of God at Mount Carmel, Elisha saw her in the distance. He said to Gehazi, “Look, the woman from Shunem is coming. 26 Run out to meet her and ask her, ‘Is everything all right with you, your husband, and your child?’” “Yes,” the woman told Gehazi, “everything is fine.”  27 But when she came to the man of God at the mountain, she fell to the ground before him and caught hold of his feet. Gehazi began to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone. She is deeply troubled, but the Lord has not told me what it is.”  28 Then she said, “Did I ask you for a son, my lord? And didn’t I say, ‘Don’t deceive me and get my hopes up’?”  29 Then Elisha said to Gehazi, “Get ready to travel; take my staff and go! Don’t talk to anyone along the way. Go quickly and lay the staff on the child’s face.”  30 But the boy’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I won’t go home unless you go with me.” So Elisha returned with her.  31 Gehazi hurried on ahead and laid the staff on the child’s face, but nothing happened. There was no sign of life. He returned to meet Elisha and told him, “The child is still dead.”  32 When Elisha arrived, the child was indeed dead, lying there on the prophet’s bed. 33 He went in alone and shut the door behind him and prayed to the Lord. 34 Then he lay down on the child’s body, placing his mouth on the child’s mouth, his eyes on the child’s eyes, and his hands on the child’s hands. And as he stretched out on him, the child’s body began to grow warm again! 35 Elisha got up, walked back and forth across the room once, and then stretched himself out again on the child. This time the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes!  36 Then Elisha summoned Gehazi. “Call the child’s mother!” he said. And when she came in, Elisha said, “Here, take your son!” 37 She fell at his feet and bowed before him, overwhelmed with gratitude. Then she took her son in her arms and carried him downstairs.
What a story! There are several things about the Shunemite woman that stands out to me. 


1.  She gave to the Lord without expecting anything in return.
She didn’t have any ulterior motive, she just wanted to bless the Man of God, first when she invited him to dinner, and later on when she made a room for him to stay in whenever he was in the area. When Elisha told her that God would give her a child in a year’s time, she said “don’t get my hopes up.”  She hadn’t even been hoping for a child.

2.  She was content with what she had. When Elisha asked what they could do for her, she said “my family takes good care of me.”

3.  When tragedy struck, she did two things.
1)    She immediately went to God (in those days, they went to the priest or prophet, but praise God we live in the dispensation of grace that we can call on God anytime we need to.) …Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16
2)    She said nothing negative, but spoke in faith. (This is the crux of what I feel God has for us in this message.) “It will be all right,” she said to her husband.  Most of us would have immediately dumped everything on our husbands! We’d be whining “this is not fair” or “how could God let this happen?”
a.                  She had another chance to tell her troubles to Gehazi but again she said everything is fine.  When we get with our friends, it is so tempting to tell them everything that’s wrong!  I’m not saying it’s a bad thing to talk to our friends, it’s good to vent sometimes, but we must be careful to speak in faith.
b.                  It is so important to be careful what we say – especially in times of stress.  I heard Joyce Meyer say more than once “Words are containers for power”  Our words can be spoken in faith and trust in God, KNOWING that He will not put more on us than we can bear, or we can be sowing words to defeat us.  Here are some things the bible has to say about the words we speak:

"May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer "- Psalm 19:4

… "you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth," Proverbs 6:2

"When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise." Proverbs 10:19 [If we spout off the minute something happens- our words may end up being sinful – accusatory, hateful, even blasphemous]

"Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18

"From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things, but the unfaithful have a craving for violence. He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin."  Proverbs 13:2-3

"Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him." Proverbs 29:20

Back to our story:  "But when she came to the man of God at the mountain, she fell to the ground before him and caught hold of his feet. Gehazi began to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone."

     4.  She held on tightly to God. How often when tragedy strikes instead of drawing as near to God as we can get, we back off.  Ever notice when someone used to sit near the front at church, was at the altar all the time, in the thick of things, then when they get offended or hurt, they’re in the back row. (No offense to those of you that sit in the back ALL the time.)  They’re sitting in the back because they are almost out the door!     
                                                                               
      Did you notice that Gehazi (a believer) tried to push her away?  Sometimes, well-meaning people, maybe one of your brothers or sisters in Christ, might try to dissuade you from standing in faith for something.  They might think that they are doing it in your best interest – trying to keep you from being hurt if God says no.  Don’t let ANYONE keep you from hanging on to God!   She determined that no matter what, she was going to stick close to God:  But the boy’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I won’t go home unless you go with me.”
   

5. 
She didn’t get her answer right away.  Elisha had to pray for the boy twice before he came back to life.  What if everyone had given up after the first unsuccessful attempt?

   
    Hundreds of years later, the story is told of another one that faced death and tragedy and spoke the words “It Is Well”
   

    Horatio Spafford lost his children when a ship was sunk at sea. All four of his daughters drowned.  His wife was rescued, and he traveled by ship to bring her home.  It is said that as he passed the spot where his daughters drowned, he went down into his cabin and penned the words of that great hymn, "It Is Well."

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
"It is well, it is well with my soul."
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Thou Satan should buffet, tho' trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul.

My sin... O, the bliss of this glorious thought,
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
It is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul.


 
And Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend,
"Even so" - it is well with my soul.

If you truly believe that God will work everything for your good, you will be able to say, at some point in your life, "It is well."

The Simple Woman's Daybook, September 13, 2010



FOR TODAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2010

Outside my window... a slightly overcast day that is predicted to turn into a sunny day.  Right now, it's 55°, and I'm loving it.
I am thinking... about what a pastor's wife shared with me:  "Shepherds don't increase the flock. Shepherds don't have sheep, sheep have sheep."  We always expect the Pastor to grow the church.  That's not his job.  His job is to protect the sheep, feed the sheep and care for them.  It's our job to multiply!
I am thankful for... grace!
From the kitchen... lemon-pepper pork chops and broccoli and cheese for dinner.   Tomorrow, pinto beans and cornbread.
I am wearing... a black tank dress with a coral bolero.  Of course, black jewelry and sandals!
I am creating... some photo collages of our retreat.
I am going... to do my regular routine this week.  No extra meetings are scheduled - I can stay home every night! Yay!
I am reading...nothing new right now.
I am hoping... to get caught up on my rest ... yeah, right!
I am hearing... one daughter getting ready for work.  I must check to see if the other daughter is up yet ...
Around the house... things are pretty well in their place ... I love that!
One of my favorite things...a worship service where you feel the Holy Spirit moving.  We had one Sunday morning and it was so awesome!
A few plans for the rest of the week: I want to declutter and re-arrange my desk. I've been reading Centsational Girl's blog post "Where Do You Blog" and it's making me feel guilty for having a messy desk! I also plan to post either on Tuesday or Wednesday my devotional that I gave at the retreat
