Who's in Charge?

I don't miss the plastic slipcovers though ...
I was so impatient to be an adult as a child! I remember thinking about how my own home would look like and how I would decorate it. The kind of clothes I would wear, the car I'd drive, how many children I would have, what my life's work would be - those things occupied most of my daydreaming.

It's funny, but the only thing that turned out like I dreamed was the number of children I would have. I always wanted 3 girls and that is exactly what the Lord sent me.

What I didn't dream about back in those days were the things no kid has any concept about in grown-up life: bills, maintenance, insurance, taxes and how challenging it is to make a marriage work and raise children!

Too bad I wasted so much time dreaming about the future instead of enjoying the wonderful care-free existence of my childhood.

Looking back, I think the thing I miss most about living at home with my parents is that they were in charge ... and I was not!

This post was written in response to Writer's Workshop prompt #5. Write about you miss most about living at home with your parents.  You can link up your own post at Kat's blog, Mama's Losin' It.

What about you? What do you miss most about childhood?

  1. I have to laugh when I think about my younger self; I remember being home sick one day and was watching TV when I was probably about 10 years old. A commercial came home for dust polish. I couldn't wait until I was hold enough to buy it myself and dust my own house (now dusting is one of my least favorite chores, LOL :) We do hurry to grow up don't we?

  2. I am with you 100%. Not worrying about a thing, feeling secure that my parents would and could take care of me. Ah, those were the days!

  3. There are pros and cons in living with your parents but I guess the cons can be disregarded. :D

  4. Oh those plastic covers! :)
It's always a good reminder not to forget to enjoy today!! I think the only thing I projected into my future when I was little was to be a teacher.

  5. the thing i miss most about my childhood is my family camp in the adirondacks. I kid you not. How i loved it there....I played all through out the woods and on the trails my daddy made. My mother was always in such a good mood as we had our camp right down the road from all her relatives...in fact, right down the road from where she was born in a little wooden house. I never really daydreamed about being an adult except once i became a teen I could not WAIT to get away from my mother...long story there.....now of course, with the physical, emotional and spiritual growth I've gone through, my attitude about my mother has changed....and now I would love to have her back here on earth for one more hug, etc. Sigh......i'm teaching my own 2 daughters (yes i always wanted 2 little girls and God blessed me and Dave with my deepest wish) to embrace each and every moment...to not wish their life away. :) this was a great post!! LOVE the pic!!!!

  6. I was in a rush to grow up too! I think I was just always looking for affirmation that everything would turn out okay. I wish I could go back to that girl and tell her not to worry so much. Love the photo you shared!

  7. Yep! I'm with you. I couldn't wait to grow up, move out, dye my hair purple, and do whatever the heck I wanted. Well, I never dyed my hair, and the rest wasn't nearly as exciting as I made it seem. God totally had a different plan for my life. I would never want to go back to the childhood I had, but living with my parents now would be a different story. In fact, that's what I wrote about. I ended up living with them again a couple years ago, and it was an amazing experience. Totally not what I expected, and thankful for how it turned out.
