Top Ten Snacks

When I was a kid, I don't remember really having "snacks" like we do nowadays.  You ate three times a day and if you were lucky, you might get a bowl of ice cream before bed.  Reaching back in the dusty archives of my memory, I do remember a few special treats we cherished as kids.

10..  The aforementioned ice cream before bedtime, usually neopolitan or chocolate.  If Granny was treating you, it might be black walnut or butter pecan ice cream if she could procure some.

The exception to this was if you were sick.  If we suffered a childhood malady, Dad would stop at this certain store (I don't remember what kind it was) and bring home sherbet.  Sherbet was considered a better alternative to ice cream if a child was running a temp.  Usually, it was orange sherbet but I do remember a happy exception:  pineapple sherbet the time I had the mumps.

9. Once in awhile, we had Jiffy Pop popcorn.

8.  Sometimes Granny would give us change out of her change purse and we would walk 3 blocks to the market and get an assortment of penny candy.

I saw an assortment of penny candies at Woolworth's in Branson, MO, similar to what we used to pick up as kids.  However, there were no candy cigarettes which was my brother's favorite!

Speaking of candy, here's a quick list of the ones we enjoyed when I grew up (all heavily influenced by granny because she is the one who purchased most of it):

7.  Circus Peanuts
6.  Orange Slices
5.  Root Beer barrels
4.  Spearmint leaves
3.  Gumdrops
2.  Brach's mix (an assortment of candies you could buy by the pound)

1.  However the main treat I remember as a child growing up was homemade Chef Boy Ar Dee pizza and Pepsi.  The pizza was made on a Saturday night (by my dad) and we consumed it by sitting around the black and white T.V. watching Perry Mason and swigging Pepsi from a glass bottle.  We bought an 8 pack of 16 oz. bottles of Pepsi once a week and all of us had to share it.  (Or was it a 10 pack?) Once the bottles were empty, no more soda until next grocery day.

Good times.

  2. I can so relate! Growing up in the same time period. I couldn't really think of any snacks we had, either. Our three meals a day. But, we always had dessert after dinner.

I remember going to the cupboard after school and getting into raisins and chocolate chips to satisfy my snake craze until dinner.

  3. oh yeah! you sure brought back the memories! I am sure it was an 8 pack. We kind of did the same with soda - grandma always got RC Cola and made popcorn while we watch the Grand Ole Opry. Fun times!

  5. A treat for us is when mom bought a cinnamon coffee cake that was covered with the white thick icing, mom cut it into pieces so we all just got an even piece. She would also buy a 1/2 gallon of vanilla ice cream and cut it in pieces just enough for every body to have a piece. My uncle's ran a implement shop and he had one of the old soda machine that had the little glass bottles of coke, he would give us 1 for free and we would put a bag of peanuts in it...Good times!!!

  6. The Chef Boyardee's pizza was a tradition when we went to my grandmothers house and I am not 30 yet!! Maybe that is where she got the idea to do it with us?? To this day I love the taste of a Chef Boyardee pizza! :)

  8. I remember those times, too. Jiffy pop was considered to expensive. Loose popcorn was bought instead. Soda was too expensive, we drank Kool-Aid or milk. Those old fashioned candies are memory lane. Ever heard of an Orange Slice Cake (made with those candy orange slices?) It's a southern cake. Can google a recipe. I sent my sister a recipe I found since she loves orange slices.

  10. When I read your post on FB, I was beginning to think my childhood might have been odd because I couldn't think of any "snacks." After reading the blog, I realize I'm not alone. . I do remember going to the Ben Franklin store with my Grandmother to buy chocolate covered raisins and peanuts for my Grandfather. They would weigh them and put them in paper sacks. We always got to choose a treat too. The comments about sodas reminded me that we used to take our bottles back to the store for a "refund." My Great-Grandmother's favorite candy was Haystacks-caramel/coconut mounds of sweetness.
