“How great is the love the Father has lavished
on us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1 NIV
Not only does He love us, and give us child-of-God
status, but He lavishes that love on us.
Lavish – what does that mean? The Thesaurus has a
field day with this word: extravagant, unrestrained, over-the-top, excessive,
plentiful, generous, abundant, copious, lush, smother … I could go on and on.
The point is, He is over-the-top with love for His
children.
And why not? God is the essence, the very epitome, of
love.
The bible tells us God is love.
He who does not love does
not know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:8
NKJV
The bible also tells us the characteristics of love in
1 Corinthians 13 (the love chapter). The whole chapter is wonderful and not
only describes love but has quite a bit to say about the motive for love; but, for my purposes today, let’s focus on these
verses:
Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude.
It does not demand its own way.
It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.
It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out.
Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
... 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT
That’s what love is.
That’s what God is.

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love these scriptures on the powerful, amazing love of God! I love the synonyms for the word "lavish". What great words to illustrate the profound love of our Father!
