Q is for Quick Hamburger Skillet and Quit

My series has been highlighting recipes to help you serve family dinners more often. In today's world we are so tempted to run through the drive-thru and pick up something because our evenings are jam-packed with meetings and games. Or maybe we've had such a busy day at work, we don't even want to think about making dinner.

Quick Hamburger Skillet is recipe of mine made for just those kind of times. It's easy and quick - you can have it done in about 25 minutes - and it is cheap and has no preservatives like those boxed dinners you find at the supermarket. You can feel good about serving it.

Step One: Brown one lb. hamburger in skillet. Sprinkle in dried onion flakes to taste. When hamburger is done, drain grease and return hamburger to skillet.

Step Two: Pour into skillet 1 small can tomato sauce. Rinse out can with half cup water and add to mixture. Add 1 Tbsp. brown sugar, 1/2 tsp. chili powder, 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. pepper. Simmer on low heat.

Step Three: Meanwhile, put on water to boil in 3 quart saucepan. When water is boiling, add approximately 8 oz. pasta. I usually use rotini, but last time I did bow-tie pasta and it was great. When pasta is done, drain and add to mixture in skillet. Mix well and bring to boil. Cover the top of the mixture with shredded cheese. (I usually use colby-monterey jack mixture.) Put a lid on the skillet and turn off the heat. Steam for about 5 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Now that we are fed and happy, let's think about my other "Q" word, quit. It's probably not what you are thinking,

Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love.1 Corinthians 16:13-14

What in the world does "quit you like men" mean? Most bible versions translate this phrase as act like men. My favorite is "Act like men (ready for battle)" in the Expanded Bible because verse 13 is really a rallying cry for the battle we Christians are in. The world hates Jesus and if you love Jesus, it will hate you. You can read in the news every day where this is becoming more and more true.

But how does a warrior for Christ react? Verse 14 says it all. We must do everything in love. We stand fast in the faith, not giving in for an instant, but still reacting with love.

To do that, we have to lean on Jesus, because in ourselves? It's really hard to always respond in love.

My prayer for you is that you feast not only with your family, but feast on the riches of Christ that can be found in His word, in prayer with Him and in the community of His saints.

Quick Hamburger Skillet and Quit is another post from my series, Feasting Body and Soul from A-Z.  I believe family dinner is important and I also believe food for the soul is just as important. Join me each day as I explore feeding both.

During April, I’m participating in the A-Z Challenge.  Over  eight hundred writers (as of last count) will be posting in various categories. Visit here to see a list of all the fantastic bloggers – a veritable smorgasbord of entries to feast upon!

  2. Good thoughts to do everything we do in love and not to quit doing that, even though the world will definitely hate us because of Jesus.

I do like your homemeade version of Hamburger helper; you are right, much more healthier for you!

  3. I love the recipe! Sounds really yummy! We don't have the option of the boxed dinners or take out, so I'm always looking for new dinner ideas!

  4. Awesome post! you are right--too many of us only "snack" on the words of Christ, or even just go hungry without even realizing we are starving! So important to feed our spirits. Gail
