When Lack Knocks on Your Door

During the month of November, I'm highlighting one favorite scripture a day and giving God praise for it. For the next six days, I will be looking at Psalm 23. This passage of scripture is so well-loved, even non-believers seem to have at least heard a portion of it.

I used to think it was a useful passage to rely on in times of grief; but in recent months (especially during COVID), I realized it was rich for any season of life you may be in.

NOVEMBER 3

There are many translations on this one verse we could spend a lot of time reading each one. (And we should.)

Today I'm looking at the Amplified one:

The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me], I shall not want. Psalm 23:1 AMP

I could use a lot of tending; how about you?

And I totally love The Passion Translation's rendering:

Yahweh is my best friend and my shepherd.
I always have more than enough. Psalm 23:1 TPT

Yahweh is my best friend! I love that.

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack. Psalm 23:1 HCSB

If He's your shepherd, you are promised to have what you need.

I thought I would share with you a discussion on Psalm 23:1 that is included in my Work in Progress. My character, Sister Clara, is sharing her insights with her bible study group after reading the part about having what we need:

Sister Clara nodded her head in agreement, “You see! It’s there, too. Everything we need to make it in this life will be given to us. We are to live our lives believing that and standing on it. When lack comes knocking at your door, slam the door in its face and say, ‘My God shall supply my need, Lack, you go away and don’t come back!’”

We all laughed as Sister Clara acted out pointing her finger to the imaginary Lack trying to get inside the door.

“God wants you to take Him at His word,” she explained.

“Don’t be afraid to claim His word. You can say things like, 'Father, I need peace in my life; and you promised I would have what I needed. I’m trusting you to give me peace.' And He will give it.”

What scripture means so much to you? I'd love to hear all about it. Please leave a comment and share.

  2. Me, too, Sandi. I need a lot of restoration. So glad He is all about that!
