Compromise

Unless you are a hermit, doing life with your community will mean sometimes you have to compromise. You have to give a little in order to get along.

I understand that.

I do that.

But there are some things you cannot compromise and still be able to look yourself in the mirror with dignity.

Some rock-solid truths I stand upon:

There is one God. You have the right to believe who your God is; but you do not have the right to take away my freedom to worship the God I know is God.

We all come from one place. All of us got our start from Adam and Eve. And so, no matter what nationality, tongue or color of our skin may be, we are brothers and sisters.

God has told us what He requires:

No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 NLT
I cannot compromise any area that does not fall under those three things: doing what is right, being merciful, and walking humbly with God.

I am an American. I love America. I stand on her constitution and the three branches of government, which each has their job to do and should not overreach into the other areas. As a lover of America, I should be able to stand tall, knowing that we have made mistakes, but we can still grow and learn and become. We are not where we need to be, but we are not where we once were.

I am free to live life the way I believe God wants me to, just as you are. We do not have the right to harm others by using our freedoms.

It's really pretty simple.

Today, I've joined the 5 Minute Friday community by free-writing 5 minutes on the word "compromise." However, these thoughts are by-products of days and days of wondering what God wants in these uncertain times.

Really, He has said what He wants in His Word. Yes, in Micah 6:8, but also the whole law and books of the prophets are summed up in two statements:

Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
This is the first and great commandment.   And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:37-39 NKJV

And who is our neighbor? Anyone with whom we come in contact.

What about you? How do you feel about compromise?

  1. Hi. I know I don't know you. I'm just a fellow FMF-er reading your blog, but more importantly I am a Christ follower like you. I want to ask you something as humbly as possible. Is your American citizenship really worthy of mention in the same breath as the one-ness of God? Don't get me wrong, I love this country. However, if something were to occur that forced me to chose between American citizenship and heavenly citizenship, I'd be packing my bags and moving to another country ASAP. I hope my comment doesn't discourage you, it's just something that has been recently brought to my attention and so I've been thinking about this concept a lot. Blessings to you.

  4. It's good to review these things, to say them to ourselves so we know and can see where we're consistent, or not. Thanks for that motivation and reminder. And for sharing!

  5. Fellow FMF but visiting today from Instaencouragements - I think a lot of our posts reflected the same thoughts with 'compromise' that we can and should compromise on our own personal preferences but not on the fundamental truths of our faith. Interesting read!

  6. Yes...there are truths that we can never compromise on. Mostly the things that God has established. Trust and obey...

  8. A good challenge, friend, to decide what's worth going to the mat for, and releasing what, in the light of eternity, doesn't matter a single bit.

    Thank you!
