Love at First Sight

Today, I'm sharing again the story of how my folks met for Writer's Workshop found at Kat Bouska: Mama's Losin' It.

My husband and I met mid-June and married the following February. Three of those months we lived in different states.  People might say we worked fast, but I was just following the path my parents laid out for me.

My grandfather and his sons were truckers. They would haul anything and everything to make a dollar. Since they were on the road all the time, they knew all the truck stops and cafés along their routes.

My mom got a job at Mary's Café where her aunt worked. Mary's Café was a favorite pit stop for my dad.  They had good coffee.

When you checked out at Mary's, there was a counter where the cash register was located. The counter had gum, candy, and cigarettes visible so you would be tempted to purchase them when paying your bill.

One day when my dad was at Mary's, he saw my mom leaning over to get something out of the counter.  He thought to himself, "Self, that is the girl for you."

My dad must have been a smooth talker, because if you knew my mom, you'd know she agonizes over every decision. Yet, it didn't take him too many months to convince her to elope with him to Tupelo, Mississippi. Why Mississippi? Because in those days, you could get a marriage license and get married all in one day!

How did your parents meet? Do you believe in love at first sight?

  1. Enjoyed the story of your parents meeting for the first time.

My dad and mother met at a park one evening. Some friends had gathered together. When he saw my mother, he picked her up and put her in the back of his pick-up truck and said "that's the girl I'm going to marry!" Very similar to your dad's first night with your mother.

  4. Ellen, I think word got out about Mississippi's laws. Some of their friends had done the same thing. I think this was before big church weddings became so popular.

Betty, I met my hubby in church, too. It's a great place to meet a spouse!

Carol, great story about your dad. I guess you could say he swept her off her feet?

  5. what a great story! yes I pretty much DO believe in love at first sight but sadly, I think for the majority of people it's "lust at first sight". Love sometimes grows as you get to know the person. I've taught my daughters to be friends first...like my hubby and I.
my parents met in the Adirondack small village where my mother grew up. My dad's family had a summer camp there and they met while swimming at the local lake. My mom says she knew right away that the Lord had my dad for HER but he wasn't a Christian yet. He didn't accept Christ until shortly after the wedding! my mom took a huge chance because she says the Lord told her that my dad would get saved. She is in heaven now and my dad misses her so much.

  6. That's a really lovely story. My parents met outside school or were introduced by friends. Their secondary schools were opposite each other. Girls school on the left and boys on the right :)

  8. My parents met on a blind date, so that's kind of boring. But when my aunt went on her first date with my uncle, her mother made her bring her 6 younger brothers and sisters along on the date. My uncle left for his deployment the next day, and my aunt didn't see him again for the next year and a half. They got married 2 weeks after he got home. They're still married, almost 50 years later!

  9. So interesting! When my husband and I got married in Mississippi almost three years ago, we had to wait at least 3 days for our marriage license...because we were waiting for the results of our syphilis tests. Oddly - MS only tested for syphilis. Nothing else.

I'm not sure how my parents met. I do know that my mom got married because her father told her the only way she was leaving his house was married or dead. My father had been married previously so it was quite scandalous and shocking.

  10. Oh, what an interesting story!! My mom's dad and my dad's dad were best friends as children, so, a long time later, as adults with then grown children of their own, they introduced my parents to each other. The rest is history!
