Day 14: Away

My brother and I had a plan.  We were going to run away and camp by the Fox River.

Being the older, more practical sister, I determined we must take supplies with us. Never one to leave home without my "stuff," even at a young age, I wanted to take some comfort items along.  I had a brain wave - didn't my brother receive a nice new shiny kid-sized wheelbarrow for Christmas?

He did.

Wouldn't it be smart to put our things in said barrow and take it with us as we made our way to the river?

It would.

However, my greed foiled our plans.  Because I kept adding things to the wheelbarrow to take, the barrow became too heavy even for the both of us to push together.

Plan A was scrapped until I could come up with a better plan.  Of course, a better plan never emerged and here we are, many years later, having never camped by the Fox River.

I can't remember now the why of our plan to leave home.  I suspect it had nothing to do with grievance but more like the sound of adventure appealing to our young minds.

Truth is, I have felt like running away various times in my life. Often when times were hard, I'd escape to a perfect paradise conjured in my brain.  I'd enjoy a few carefree hours where my troubles were left far behind, but then reality would show up, and the fun was over.

There really is only one place to run to when you need to get away. Run to the One who knows you best, and the only One who can do something about your burdens.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. - Matthew 11:28

  1. Too cute about your brother and yours adventure from your youth! I know my kids thought of leaving Montana and making their way to Southern California so they could camp along the beach when they were like 10 and 14 years old, LOL. Maybe its just the planning that is the fun part of it :)

I think I run away not by going some place but getting "lost" on the computer, checking this, checking that.

  2. I don't have much of a chance to run away any more! After making arrangements to care for the dog and for Mom, it hardly seems worth it! I guess my running away is just taking off for a few hours and getting a flavored coffee or an ice cream cone.

  3. This may sound crazy but I go to my bathroom, often to soak in the tub while pondering the scripture on my wall; "Be still and know I am God". This reminds me that He's got this and EVERYTHING so I should just relax and let HIM.

  4. I go to sleep. Truly as bad as things seem, sleep always makes them seem less bad!

  5. I sometimes just want to run away and never come back. But once I run, I realize that I love my life and want to get back.
