Talk about embarrassing!

My friend, Sue, had come over.  We were trying to encourage each other to exercise so we were meeting every day to do an exercise video together.  It was quite entertaining to see two ladies in their thirties try to imitate some of the aerobic moves on that tape.  My three year-old was right there with us, getting in the way.  In her mind, she was showing us how it was done.

Finally pooped, we turned the video off and sat at the kitchen table nursing a glass of sweet tea. (I know, right?  We should have drank water.) We talked and talked.

It was getting on to lunch time, when my daughter came into the room and climbed up onto my lap.  She sat there awhile as the conversation kept flowing.

Suddenly, in mid-sentence she leaped into the conversation with, "Mommy when is Sue going home? She's been here long enough."

Sue burst out laughing while I turned red with mortification.

Little kids can say something like that and get away with it.  Imagine if my husband had came in and said such a thing?  Instead of laughing, Sue would probably have been offended.

You hear it all the time.  You will be in Wal-Mart and hear some kid will say in a loud voice, "Mommy, why does that man look so fat,"  or any kind of personal observation that occurs to them. Kids have no filter.  They just say what is in their head.  They are not worried about offending anyone.

It's embarrassing when a kid says something about you, because you know kids usually speak the truth!

Mama’s Losin’ It

This post was written in response to Writer's Workshop prompt 5.) Write a list of things kids say that adults can't get away with. While not a list, I thought you'd enjoy a true story about a kid speaking her mind! Has your child ever said something embarrassing?  Share in the comments or link up at Kat's blog, Mama's Losin' It.

  2. That is a great story! I imagined the two of you working out and the drinking sweet tea, still not as bad as me and my friend one time after a nice long walk around a lake we decided to get breakfast at Cracker Barrel, so basically all the calories we lost working out we gained back right after.

Kids do get away with a lot. I just had a baby and one of my friends kids said something like when is she going to have her baby and I was holding the baby in a wrap around my body.....his mom was pretty embarrassed for him but I didn't really care.

  3. Sometimes elderly people can be blunt, as well. They don't care about sugarcoating things! When I was a kid, we'd overstayed our welcome at my stepgrandparents' house. My stepgrandmother looked at her husband and said, "I guess we should go to bed so these nice folks can leave." I loved that!

  4. I have been on your side of this type of interaction and Sue's! It is less embarrassing on her side!
