F.F.F.-03.22.13

Hello!  The weekend is almost here and we are celebrating the week that was.

This week is about to become history and it's worth stopping a moment and reflecting.

For me, this week was a quiet every-day kind of week that even now is slipping away like a pearl on a string that forms a beautiful necklace.

I'm working on my descriptive skills, ok?

So, no exciting announcements to share.  My 5 favorites will be the kinds of things that can happen any week, but I say, "Thank God for it."  You know, you never appreciate hum-drum life until you fear it is slipping away.  Then, it becomes the most magical gift you could ever have.

1.  Favorite Meal:  This week, I made Southern-style rolled chicken and dumplings.  It only took me 37 years to perfect making them, but it was worth it.  (The secret is to divide your dough into 4 or 5 small batches and roll each portion as thin as possible.) To me, it is the ultimate comfort-food.  Hubby has been feeling under-the-weather and he was able to keep the dumplings down.    There's nothing like nourishing your family to make a mama's heart feel good.

I want to take a moment to focus on a priority that I have held close ever since I became the family manager of my home.  The family table, in my humble opinion, is a sacred thing and we homemakers should fight for it tooth and nail.  This is the time that families bond.  Hopefully, they are bonding over good nourishing meals, but even more important is the conversation. This is the time to share your day, your struggles, the funny things that happen. We've been known to sit for hours around the table and "yak."

2. Favorite Post to Write:  I did another "nostalgic" piece this week.  I love to write family stories that tell of the zany things said or done in the past.  This week, I poked fun at my childhood self in the post, My Life Makes Me Laugh.  Can we say drama queen?

3. Favorite Post to Read:  Although not a FUN post to read, Ann Voskamp's "After Steubenville: 25 Things Our Sons Need to Know About Manhood," should be required reading for every parent of sons.  I have daughters, but should I ever have a grandson, I will be telling him these same things.  I hope every man my daughters come in contact have been told these things as well.

4.  Favorite Quote of the Week:

Writers: When you write, remember Joseph--faithful in small things, often unnoticed and overlooked. But God rewarded.

Good advice, not just for writers, but everyone.  I'm especially thinking of homemakers who feel their efforts are unappreciated.  God sees!

5.  Favorite Song:  Have you heard Travis Cottrell's rendition of Just As I Am on his CD, When the Stars Burn Down?  I've been listening to it over and over this week ... Food for the soul.

And so ends another week on the Journey.  Maybe next week will be more exciting, maybe no; but in everything and in all ways, God is good, and there will be blessings.

  1. I so agree about appreciating humdrum lives -- after a time of illness or severe problems, we long for just an ordinary day! And there is so much God blesses us with in those everyday moments.

I love gathering around the dinner table at night and checking in with everybody all together.

  2. We are certainly in agreement on the family table! My boys still talk about how few friends they have that sit and eat home-cooked food all together. So important.

Glad to hear your week has been good. Sometimes "not earth-shattering" is just fine!

  4. Oh--great simile there :)
I have two sons and two grandsons--I am going to find Ann's post and read it.
I noticed that your table is set with Blue Willow--I have that set too! And I agree 100% with you on family meals!

  5. I loved the family dinner table. Even though the kids are grown, we still have dinners at the regular time and try to eat together as much as possible.

Ordinary routine weeks are sometimes the blessing themselves. Thanks for sharing yours!

I'm going to read Ann's post. You've got my curiosity going.

  6. Sometimes it just takes a little too much drama in our lives to yearn for the humdrum. So hurray for humdrum! You are full of gratefulness for these lovely graces.
