Thankful for the Ability to Read

Yesterday, I talked about being so thankful for my 5 senses.  Along with the ability to see, I'm thankful for the ability to read.

"According to the CIA World Factbook it is estimated that the overall world literacy rate was 82%." (Wiki Answers)

I learned to read in the first grade with the "Dick and Jane" books.  I still remember all about their pets, Puff and Spot.  It wasn't long before I graduated to chapter books and began devouring every book in the library.

Oh, the wonderful books of my childhood:  The Wind in the Willows, Bambi, The Bobbsey Twins, Heidi, and all the little biography books I used to check out at school.  I remember reading about Betsy Ross, Martha Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  I can't forget all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, and The Boxcar Series and all the Nancy Drew books.  I even read "The Five Little Peppers,"  which gives you an idea how old I am.

Reading has kept me entertained, informed and inspired.  I thank God I learned to read - and I thank Him He used a teacher to do it!

  1. I was surprised to note read that the literacy rate is so high in the world. Hurray.

I love being able to read as well. You mentioned many of my childhood favourites like The Bobbsey Twins and Heidi. I still have my copy of "The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew"!

I will go check out The Giving Thanks Challenge. I am also writing a daily gratitude at my blog, many times it is the last thing on that day's post.
