Growing by Stretching

Today, I'm joining a group that practices writing for 5 minutes on a subject that our hostess, Lisa-Jo Baker, picks each week.  We are to write for 5 minutes with no backtracking, editing or second thoughts.  Today's word is:

STRETCH

The fact that I am writing on the word for stretch for 5 minutes is because I want to stretch my writing abilities.

I am a planner, a thinker, a person who likes to take things one step at a time.  Spontaneity is not my gift.  Writing for 5 minutes without planning ahead, therefore, is a challenge.

I do like to be stretched, though.  It makes me a better person.

Take for example, my participating as worship leader in my little church.  I accepted the responsibility because I want to be a willing worker and to do whatever Christ calls me to do.  I certainly do not have any musical training, nor much talent either, so responding to the call has been a real stretch for me.

It makes me laugh to think how a few years prior, I was asked to put the songs on the overhead projector for worship.  I did not want to do that because I felt conspicuous worshiping as I was putting the songs up (the projector was situated at the front of the sanctuary.)  Now, here I am, standing in front of people, leading worship.  How I've grown!

I feel someday I will look back and see that this "stretching" has made me grow. One day, I will be so comfortable worshiping in front of others I won't even give it a second thought.

STOP

  1. It is fun to look back and see how we've grown as we allow God to stretch us!

  2. Spontaneity is not a gift I have either, and I definitely understand the reluctance to take that kind of leadership role — but I think it's a great thing, to be a part of your community in such a way!

  3. Love your thought on growing comfortable with where that stretch takes us! There is great joy to be found when we jump out of our comfort zone for Him -- so glad you're experiencing that!

  4. I, too, am a planner and thinker who isn't very spontaneous. However, I look forward to Five Minute Fridays so that I can let loose and actually NOT plan something for once. I don't have to think it all out ahead of time, so I just let the words flow.

Also, your post reminded me of something that I saw on Facebook the other day. It's a quote by author, Kurt Vonnegut that says, “Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you'll look back and realize they were big things.”
