Stylin'

I'm writing on prompt 1 this week at the Writer's Workshop:

1.) Describe an outfit you LOVED wearing.

I grew up in the early 70's, m'kay? It was back in the day of hip-huggers and bell- bottomed pants - or at least flared leg pants - tight t-shirts, choker collars, Jesus sandals - and ...

wigs...

Yes, seriously I loved this outfit. Burnt orange brushed denim hip-huggers, navy blue choker collar shirt, and Jesus sandals.  (Yes, I'm wearing Jesus sandals but you can't see them because someone cut off my feet in this picture.  Obviously, I inherited my photography skills.)

Did you know about Jesus sandals?  They were brown leather with a strap across the instep, a strap across the big toe and a thin braided strap that went vertically from the toe strap to the instep strap. All the teens in central Florida wore them, boys and girls alike.  We bought them from the Army-Navy store (do those stores exist anymore?).  The first thing you did when you brought them home was wear them and go step in a mud puddle and then let them dry on your feet. This produced a sandal with a curled up sole and made it look "in" to all the other teenagers.  If you couldn't find a mud puddle, you ran water into a tub and stood in it with the sandals on. Once they were broke in, you lived in them and wore them with all your outfits.  Shorts, jeans, even miniskirts or dresses - all looked cute with Jesus sandals.

But I digress.

Back in the day, we all wore our hair long and straight and parted down the middle. (Again, boys as well as girls)

But sometimes, when we were feeling wild and crazy ... we might wear ... a WIG!

Nah, seriously I only wore it once.  Once was enough!

In the interest of full disclosure, I previously wrote a post using this same picture back in 2008.  I was linking up with the Sincerely 'Fro Me to You crowd.  You can read it here. That wig was crazy enough to write about twice!

  1. Lord boards. I got it. And I grew up in 70s as well. My favorite outfit had the huge collar -- all polyester I'm sure. Wish I had some of those pictures.

  2. Oh my lands, that is so funny. I remember the Jesus sandals but I never owned a pair. Neither did I go the wig route. But the bell bottoms and polyester I was all over. LOL.

  3. I can't say I ever heard of Jesus sandals before, but now I know! I can still picture my white sweatshirt with the grean peace sign on it. My favorite!
