Five Minute Friday -

Here is my best 5 minutes on:

EMPTY

I really don't feel empty very often.  I am blessed that my mind is so active. I have so many interests that I'm hard-pressed to find time to really do all the things I want to do.

But sometimes, spiritually, there can come an empty feeling.  When that happens, I know it means that I have been lax spending alone time with God.  You can only give out so much before you need a refill.  You can't give what you don't have.

An old song comes to mind:

Fill My Cup Lord
Like the woman at the well, I was seeking
For things that never satisfy
And then I heard my Savior speaking
"Draw from the well that never will run dry" (Lord please fill my cup)
Chorus:
Fill my cup, Lord
I lift it up, Lord
Come and quench this thirsting in my soul
Bread of Heaven feed me till I want no more
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole (fill it, make me whole)
So my brother if the things this world gave you
Leave hungers that won't go away
My blessed Lord will come and save you
If you kneel to Him and humbly pray (humbly kneel to pray)
Repeat Chorus
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole
Lord make me whole
(Wanda Jackson)

If you come expecting, He will always fill you up.  There's a scripture that talks about the Lord giving you the Holy Spirit if you ask for it.  He says that natural fathers don't give their children a scorpion when they cry for bread.  Neither would He give us something bad when we are hungry for Him.

If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?  Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11:11-13 NKJV

If you are hungry for more of Him, you can just ask Him. He won't deny you. He might make you wait a little time in prayer to test you if you are serious.

But how could He not answer you with a yes when all you want is more of Him?  After all, that is why He created mankind. He wanted fellowship.

Fellowship from someone who willingly came.

Not a robot, but a flesh and blood person who is empty and wants to be filled with the presence of God.

You can be that person.

All you have to do is ask.

Stop

Ok, after my 5 minutes were up, I looked for the lyrics to "Fill My Cup" and looked up the reference to the scripture I quoted.  This Five Minute Friday is such a challenge for me, but it is a good thing to be stretched.

  1. Jerralea, I came over to check out your blog from today's Five Minute Friday. In spite of what's going in our lives right now, usually my mind is like yours and IF I feel empty it's because of something stirring up like Jim's illness or it's as you say I've not spent enough time alone with God. And I love the hymn Fill My Cup Lord. One of my all-time favorites. I'll be following your journey.

  4. It's funny that I read this - this morning. I had just done a guest point on a friend's reading-the-bible-through-the year blog about this very thing. My theme was simplicity and being still to feel the Lord. You words expressed the exact concept beautifully. I do need to rest and be filled. Heading to FL to visit family for our break. Hopefully, the change of routine will allow me to do just that.
