Friday's Fave Five- July 24, 2009

TGIF! It's time to reflect on my week and pick my Friday's Fave Five.

1. On Saturday, two of my daughters, Liss and Malia, and I went yard sale-ing. We had a ton of fun and had what we like to call quality "bonding time." Lately, Liss and I have really gotten into thrifting and yard sale-ing. Below are a couple items I picked up recently at the Teen Challenge Thrift store:

The wooden plate was $1, the plate stand was 10¢, and the candle stick was 50¢. You can't get better than that -- well, unless it was free ...

The only drawback to all this going to thrift stores and yard sales is finding a place to display all my goodies! I may have to get rid of some of my older things ...

2. The next bright spot in my week is that finally, after 3 years, my hydrangea bush started blooming! I was about to give up!

What is funny is that the blooms are all facing the house and nothing on the side of the bush that faces the street!

3. One of my new favorite things are verbena plants. I had never planted those before, but they grow well on my front porch. I have both red and purple ones. Here is the purple (the picture does not do it justice):

4. I can't have a post without mentioning food! Tuesday, I made Orange Chicken and Fried Rice. It was so yummy! (Sorry, no photo.)

5. My buddy Steve gave me a sack full of fresh tomatoes out of his garden. They have a really good flavor. I love eating tomatoes this time of year.

How did your week go? Why don't you link up with Suzanne at Living to Tell the Story and tell us all about it?

  1. Your blooms are cute the way they face your house. Orange chicken and friend rice - the name already sounds yummy :)

P.S. I appreciate your dropping by at my last week's FFF post. We have yard sales in Bangkok but they're very rare. I love discovering things from yard sales. My friends and I used to compare finds and brag about the cheapest price we get on the neatest yard sale stuff. I wish those days would come back.

  2. Man, those would be on my list of five faves, too! Before I finished reading your description of your finds, I was thinking of the very next paragraph -- where to put the finds. And free fresh tomatoes? Swoon. Enjoy your weekend!

  3. I don't go yard-sale-ing much, but it's neat to find good stuff that way.

Funny how your hydrangea bush is blooming on one side! We have a purple one -- I just love it.

  7. Great post. I love Verbena too especially a variety called Homestead Purple which is borderline hardy where I live. I also have the same problem with yard sale, thrift store, auction finds. I tell my husband he needs to put on an addition!

Jealous....we are still waiting for garden tomatoes.

  8. Your chicken dish sounds good and your plants look so pretty. We have had so much rain this summer that our tomatoes are few and far between. I hope we are able to get some at the farmer's market.

LOL to your hydrangeas. Guess they just want to bloom for your pleasure and nobody else's.

  12. Oh I love your thrift store and yard sale finds. And how lucky are you to get a sack of fresh tomatoes.
    Great list Jerri.

BTW I can't remember how the dragon fruit tasted but I know it was yummy. I'd have to eat another one and I'll let you know.
