Second Birth

As we busily finish up our preparations for celebrating Christ's birth, I began thinking about birthdays.

In my family, the birthday person gets to choose the menu for dinner that evening and picks out a cake. We have a set amount put side for gifts; and most often I love giving cash to the adults, because why not buy what you really want? I can't be trusted to pick out your dream gift.

I began to wonder, why don't we celebrate the birth that counts for eternity? The day I was born again and became a child of God is much more important than when I entered the world. My second birth ensures I'm bound for the ultimate destination when I leave the world.

Trouble is ... I don't remember the exact day. It was on a Sunday in June, the first Sunday I was back home after being on vacation, the year I was fourteen. I just don't remember what week that was.

Why didn't somebody write it down?

No matter, I'll celebrate my second birth all during the month of June. Something that momentous deserves at least a month-long celebration.

Five minutes are up! This first part of my post was written in response to a one-word prompt, "birth," for the Five Minute Friday group of writers. We write for five minutes on our weekly prompt. But as usual, I have more to say, so I hope you'll hang around for the rest:

How SHOULD I celebrate my second birth?

First and foremost, gratitude should be my posture. How is it that I would be so privileged to hear the gospel message and be drawn to it by the Holy Spirit?

How is it that my King and my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ would consider me His friend and lay down His life for me? And then, having rose from the dead, promises that once I accepted Him as my personal Savior, He would never leave or forsake me?

He said if I were to seek Him and His kingdom all things would be added to me.

Friends, that is cause for celebrating all year long!

Have you ever celebrated your second birth? I'd love to hear all about it. Please leave a comment and share.

  1. I love the idea of celebrating my second birth. My Pastor talks about preaching the gospel to ourselves. When we thank God for saving us and remind ourselves daily of the gift of salvation , we have something to celebrate daily. I am stopping by from Five Minute Friday.

  2. I celebrate my Christian birth
    every bloody day,
    for in it I am given worth
    for which I need not pay.
    My value is intrinsic
    to the God who's made me thus,
    and His love's no gimmick;
    there's nothing to discuss
    in the realm of earned grace,
    for nothing can be won;
    no action gives me pride of place
    save acceptance of the Son.
    From this birth, life goes forward
    in honoured service of the Lord.
