Laughter - The Best Medicine

I love a big belly-laugh, don't you?

I'm the kind of person who can take one funny and make it last all day. Everyone else will have forgotten a funny incident and go on with their lives, and I'm over at the keyboard, chortling from time to time. Because I just can't let it go.

In fact, I don't even have to have something new to laugh about - my memory serves up stories from the past that I find just as amusing today as I did when it first happened.

It's a gift, really.

A happy heart is good medicine and a joyful mind causes healing,But a broken spirit dries up the bones. (Prov. 17:22 AMP)

Joy and laughter make us happy and cheerful. If you can't find anything to bring you joy, you're just a step away from depression.

So, I say, search for the funny, the amusing, the stories that make you chuckle out loud. It's good for you.

Sometimes, you don't even have to look for it. God sends it to you because He knows you need it.

Yesterday, I started this post but didn't have time to finish it. We had decided to visit a church where a beloved pastor friend of ours was holding a revival. I had arranged to take off early because this church? It was deep in the bowels of Missouri - out where we like to say "so far back in the woods, the hoot owls don't even hoot."

Well, of course, we got lost. Lost so badly that now we were 20 minutes late for service. Friends, I am not a happy camper when I'm lost. I was thinking some uncharitable thoughts. (I was already upset because I had forgotten my phone at work and I felt so helpless without it!)

We started over at the beginning of the road. This time, we saw the church sign that said one mile pointing left. We said, "Okay, we are going to time one mile on the odometer and turn left the first opportunity we get, even if it looks like a driveway."

It was so dark out there!

We went one mile and sure enough, we saw a path leading through the woods on the left. We'd seen that opening earlier but didn't take it because of the sign at the opening, "MASS GRAVE."

What in the world? Sure enough, we took the path and eventually came to a little clearing and there was the church.

Who'd ever think a church would be on a road marked, "MASS GRAVE?"

i started to grin. My grumpy attitude immediately got better. "Hey, I can write about this!"

But it gets better.  When we went inside, they were still singing. One lady got up and sang a special, "Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down!"

You can't make this stuff up!

  3. How in the world do they get 'church' out of 'mass grave' unless the church was Sardis from the book of The Revelation...the church that was dead. That is hysterical. Love that you were able to laugh about being late!

  4. Yesterday in my customary resplendentdaughter.blogspot.com post (not the one I submitted here at The Loft today), I commented that God has a sense of humor. Oh, he surely does! This post of yours reminds us of that!
Our church building is often commented on, because it really does look like a ski lodge. The other day our pastor quipped, "And we can help you get your lift ticket to Heaven"! True! But, really...lol!

  5. As usual. I loved your post. Made me laugh. Thanks. God surely has a sense of humor. Who would ask the blind man, what can I do for you? When my daughter was four. I was reading to her about Jesus at the mount of olives. She couldn't stop laughing. I didn't see anything funny. She had discovered olives and imagined Jesus on a mountain of black and green pitted olives. Sorry, but I couldn't stop laughing myself.

  6. Reasons to laugh right out loud are all around us ... we just have to get out of our own way to see their invitations!
