A long line of sleepers ...

One of the things I really look forward to with much anticipation every day is ... sleep.

Yeah, I don't know if it is because I'm no longer  a spring chicken .. ahem ... but I really do love me some sleep.

I think my love affair with sleep began when I was a mother of three girls who worked two jobs to afford gas and frequent McDonald's drive thru runs for sweet teas. Working mom plus teenagers equals keeping the road hot.

So, about mid-day, I'd start dreaming about how good it would feel to get home, put on some comfy clothes and relax on my bed. Sometimes the girls and I would have heart-to-heart convos while I was laid out on my bed, but more often than not, as soon as my head hit the pillow, I was OUT.

I blamed the girls for being sleep-deprived; but now that I'm an empty-nester, I find I still require a lot of sleep.

Does that mean I sleep in every chance I get?  Not on your life! Around 5 a.m., I start becoming conscious and that is often the time I will remember to pray for people and plan my day. By 6 a.m. I'm ready to be up.  If I happen to be on holiday or vacation, I will make myself stay in bed until 8 a.m. but it's really a waste of time. Because the brain. Is. On.

I come from a long line of great sleepers. My dad was champion at it and could fall asleep anywhere and anytime. His sleeping place of choice was the couch, right in the midst of family life. We never woke him up with our television shows or game-playing or even arguing.

He would jerk awake, however, if the house got too quiet.

My favorite sleeping place is my king-sized bed and I love it so much that I once wrote a post dedicated to it, My Bed, How I Love Thee

Sleep is really a gift from God - "for he gives to his beloved sleep" - and I plan to avail myself of that gift whenever I can!

  2. I do enjoy laying my head down to rest. I am not a napper and generally feel worse after a nap. I can relate to those early morning prayers...
    Have a great evening!

  3. Hi Jerralea! Oh my gosh, I LOVE to sleep. My mom wasn't much of a sleeper, and she told me that as I age, I'll need less and less. I was sad! But luckily, I can still rack it pretty hard :)

I'm very much an afternoon/evening person. I do not like alarm clocks. You wake up at 5? Wow. My alarm goes off at 6, and the 'snooze-a-thon' is on. Yeah. I love sleeping.

Blessings for a wonderful night of sleep!

  4. I wish I was a better sleeper than I am. I tend to have a bit of insomnia here and there, but I do like my naps when I can catch them!

  5. that's funny that your Dad would wake up when it was too quiet. Some people are like that--they sleep best with a monotone of noise in the background.

  6. I'm an early riser too and tend to fall asleep early. I have a love affair with my bed too, the only problem is that so do our 4 dogs and that tends to interfere with sleep a bit!

  7. Oh man, there is nothing quite like a mid afternoon nap. It doesn't even have to be super long. Just a quick power nap would be wonderful everyday!
