Way Back When

My favorite pieces to write are nostalgic pieces. I love
Me and My Dad Way Back When
recalling my childhood and love even more to write about it.

I'm always thinking about what happened way back when.

When I was the oldest child living at home, when we went on vacations, or funny things my grandmothers said or did - all of it is fodder for blog posts. I don't want to forget a moment of it.

Did it mean that my life was storybook perfect way back when?  Oh no! We had issues like any other family and alcoholism reared its ugly head many times way back when, not just in my immediate family but also in extended family. Alcohol is our family's downfall and that is why I feel so strongly about avoiding it.

I just choose to dwell on the happy memories - of which there were a ton!

It's not wrong to think on the past; but, if you let those memories cripple you from going on with your life, you might need to block those images from your brain.

We are what we think. Why not dwell on the good stuff? You can't change the bad, anyway. Don't give it any place in the here and now.  Leave it back in the when.

As the good book says,
Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Phil. 4:8 MSG

When the past comes to mind, dwell on the happy!

5 Minute Friday is now hosted by Kate at the blog "heading home." This is meant to be a free write, which means: no editing, no over-thinking, no worrying about perfect grammar or punctuation.

Just write.

Also, the most important rule is that you visit the blog of the person who linked up before you and leave some encouragement.  That’s the most fun of all, and the heart of this community.

  1. You certainly have that right, Jerralea...we are what we think! Great post! It is so much better to do as you say and remember the happy times rather than focusing on the negative.
