It's true. I put off everything unpleasant as long as I possibly can. I will make out a list of things to do, and then do all the ones I like first.

It was only a short while ago that I figured out why I do that. It's because I'm also a perfectionist. If I have fears that I can't do it perfectly, then I just don't do it.
At least, not until I'm forced.
Then, biting the bullet, I get down to the nitty-gritty and start. Starting is like 90% of the project, after that everything flows and the next thing I know, I'm done. I'm scratching my head wondering why in the world I made this such a big deal?
I've got issues.
Since I know myself, I've been making it a priority to work ahead at my job. This leaves me leeway so I can put off something for a day or two and still have it done on time!
I may be a perfectionist procrastinator, but I've learned to make allowances for it.

That totally makes sense. To put the worst job last to avoid failure. I do my job list both ways. Sometimes I just want to get the hardest, most uncomfortable job checked off my list first so I can enjoy the rest without the worry, but then I also often procrastinate that which is hard to avoid the uncertainty of outcome. Humm... so I wonder what that makes me?
ReplyDeleteI am also a terrible procrastinator. Not sure I'm a perfectionist, but a little fear of failure is definitely part of me. Thans for making me think abou this.
ReplyDeleteI used to procrastinate, but then had children and was working several part time jobs at home; I had to learn how not to procrastinate since I didn't have my previous unencumbered schedule before kids and didn't want to be up all night sometimes to get the work done that needed to be done :)

I'd like to joing the Procrastinators Club, but I'll put it off until tomorrow. :)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you kind of have the procrastination thing under control to me. If you allow yourself time to still get things done by the deadline then that's not procrastination, that's planning!
ReplyDeleteI understand you completely. Unfortunately for me, I procrastinate even the good stuff... I am a chronic procrastinator and I am glad to know that you've figured some system around it. It gives me hope. The best I have been able to do, sometimes, it's start with the work I don't want to do first... it's an "eat your vegetables before dessert" situation.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely a procrastinator too! I wish it was because I was a perfectionist...I fear it's more because I'm lazy. lol
