The Blue Ghost

I have written many times about my granny.  Today, I was thinking of an incident that involved my other grandmother.  She was very special in my life as well - I just didn't get to keep her as long!

One particular time, everyone was at our house in Darby, FL.  At that time, Darby was a very rural area and the surrounding fields were like an enchanted woodland.  So many creeks to wade and trees to climb! It drew us kids to it like a magnet and we had tons of fun exploring.

Finally, about dusk, Micki and I came back to the house and went inside for sustenance.  The boys, however, would not come in, even though the mamas had called and called for them.

Grandma was getting impatient.  She wanted the boys to come in and eat so we could clean up the kitchen and they could head back home. We were standing at the window looking to see if we could see the boys when her eyes fell on a light blue blanket folded up on the couch.

It was as if a light bulb went off in her head.  "I'm going to teach those boys a lesson," she declared, "and scare them into coming in whenever it is dark. Don't you girls say a word."

The next thing I know, my very proper grandmother, who wore skirts for fun(!) and gold slippers with jewels on them, threw  the blue blanket over her perfectly coiffed hair and went outside to sneak amongst the trees. She began to moan softly as she hunted her prey.

Presently two boys ran out of the woods and burst into the house yelling, "A ghost ... we've seen a blue ghost! It was going, 'Boooooooohhhh'. It was coming after us!"

Aunt Norma calmly said "That is what you get for staying out after dark. Now clean up and eat, because we need to get on the road.  You got school tomorrow."

Later, Grandma walked in from the utility room like she'd been there all along, every hair in place and the blanket nowhere to be seen.

Of course, the Blue Ghost became a fun family story to repeat - but we waited awhile before it was told.

Mama's Losin' It

This post was written in response to Writer's Workshop prompt 1.) Something that spooked you. Although, I was not spooked at the above story, the terror on my little brother's face was very memorable!

  1. What fun memories! My aunt was always scaring us kids. Took me years into adulthood to go outside after dark. :)

  4. Haha, that's great! I love the part of the story that says she came in from the utility room with every hair in place. You lived in FL for how long? Did I know this?
