Scared for the Future

This week, I have chosen this prompt at Writer's Workshop:  5.) Tell us about one of the scariest moments of your life.

I'm  torn between sharing about two scary moments:

  • The night my husband woke us up and said, "We have to get out.  The water is raising fast.  It's already on our back step."  We each grabbed a laundry basket and put in our most prized possessions and quickly got dressed.  We had to wade in the water to get out, climbing over a hill of sandbags that encircled our place.  Torrents of rain beat upon us as we ran across the street where we had parked our vehicles just in case we had to evacuate.  I glanced back at my little home, wondering if it would ever look the same ...
  • Or, the time my husband was in the hospital, and his doctor asked to see me.  I sat in his office as he abruptly said, "You know your husband will never work again, right?"   Umm ... no, I didn't know that. I felt like he had slapped me in the face.  I didn't even have a full-time job at the time and my first thought was "How in the world will I ever support us?"

Now, that I'm on the other side of these events, I feel calm and know that God provided for us and everything worked out.  But it was a different story when it was happening.

I'm so thankful that I know where to go when crisis threatens.  I go to God's word and read of His provision for His children.  I stand on His Word and He never lets me down.

Here are a couple favorite scriptures that I stood on then (and stand on now)

Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV)

Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

John 10:10 b (KJV)

... I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Abundant living does not mean necessarily being wealthy, but being rich in the things that matter.  Love, joy, peace, friendship and having your needs met.  (And sometimes, some of your wants thrown in for good measure.)

Yes, I've been scared.  But fear doesn't last very long when I get my eyes off the situation and put my focus on Jesus!

  1. Floods are so devastating. I am glad you got out safely. And I am left wondering about your husband. I hope the dr. was not right. Either way I am glad your faith sustained you.

  3. Having lived near ND, I have been witness to many floods over the years; some beyond devestating. Love you comment that removing our focus from the pain and tragedy and focusing on Christ permits us to move forward.
