Friday's Fave Five-06.15.12

Blessed Friday, here once again!

On Fridays, I like to look back and reflect on the highlights of the week.

1.  Yard Sale Season:  If you remember from last year, I talked about how much fun my daughter and I have going to yard sales.  We like to go to them, but never want to give them!  We always wait until school's out to start, and last Saturday was our first "yard salin'" of the season.  We both found cute stuff we love and stayed under budget.  Yay!

2..  Sunday was the first Sunday for our new pastor at the church I attend (and work part-time.)  We had a good day, and for the evening service, our friends, Wayne and Glenda, dropped by and visited the service.  After church, we went to one of our favorite spots, Dairy Queen, and had ice cream.  (Those of my readers who have heard me speak of Wayne and Glenda before know that anytime we are with them, ice cream is involved.) I decided to try something new and had the Peanut Butter Bash.  Oh. My. It. Is. So. Good.

3.  This week has been Vacation Bible School Week at my church where I work full time.  It's been a great week with lots of kids attending.  I had said earlier in the week that I was thankful for VBS directors, and also thankful that, this year, it wasn't me.  Being a VBS director is a tough job.  So, if you know a VBS director, tell them how much you appreciate them, and pray for them. I'm always amazed at the amount of willing workers in this church.  Somebody always steps up to the plate, so to speak, when help is needed.  This year, a lot of our workers were youth and they did a great job.  Seeing youth at work is definitely a highlight for me!

4.  This week, my favorite meal was Monday night's Pressure-Cooked Riblets and Baked Sweet Potatoes.  Yummy!  Years ago, I posted a recipe called "Pressure Cooker Green Bean Dinner." It continues to get the most page-views of anything I've ever posted.  (It baffles me ... evidently there is a lot of interest in using the pressure cooker... I can't believe my other scintillating posts are left unread!) Anyway, riblets are another thing that I always start out in the pressure cooker (and then finishes up in the broiler.)  This coming Tuesday, I'll be posting my recipe for this tasty meal at Jen's Tasty Tuesday (great segue, no?) at her blog, Balancing Beauty and Bedlam.

5.  Quote of the week

"Jesus told His disciples, "Let not your heart be troubled" when they learned He would be leaving them. Where did Jesus place the responsibility to remain encouraged? Squarely on the disciples. It was their choice not to let their hearts be troubled. Too often we allow ourselves to become victims of circumstances as if we have no choice, no say in the matter. But according to Jesus, we can choose to be encouraged."
David Jeremiah … Turning Point Devotional, 6/13/12

The Old Testament tells us that David encouraged himself in the Lord.  How did he do that?  I think he probably remembered all the times that God had delivered him and blessed him.  His courage was renewed when he remembered how much God loved him.

Be encouraged this week, and go out there and make the most of your opportunities!

  1. Oh my goodness - Peanut Butter Bash sounds delish! I wonder if our Dairy Queen has it? I'll have to check it out!

I've done numerous DVBS programs - lots of fun and lots of hard work. But it's always a joy to see the kids learning about the Lord and praising Him.

I'll have to check out your recipes - my mom used a pressure cooker but wouldn't let me near it!

    Happy weekend!

  4. I wish I could eat ice cream -- that sounds wonderful.

I'm glad the first Sunday with a new pastor went so well!

VBS directors are mighty brave! And dependent on the Lord.

I've never used a pressure cooker -- they scare me a little bit, but I guess that's unnecessary.

Your last one is very convicting.

  7. Y'know, I'm just returning my mom's pressure cooker I'd been experimenting with. I haven't quite got the hang of it. It's probably why you've had so much interest in your recipe! That ice cream looks fantastic! Thanks for reminder to pray for VBS directors -- they DO work hard.

Pressure cooking scares me a bit but boy oh boy I like the results.
