The psalmist said that he hid the word in his heart so that he wouldn't sin. Memorizing scripture helps you to know the nature and attributes of God and the difference between right and wrong
Also, when you have the Word memorized, the Holy Spirit will help you remember it just at the time you need it. He can't help you, though, if you never learned it in the first place!
Most importantly, knowing scripture helps you fight the enemy of your soul. How did Jesus fight satan during the temptation of Christ? He quoted scripture to him. Satan could say nothing because he knew it was the truth.
Christ is our example in every way. He expects you to use the Word whenever temptation comes your way. If you don't know the Word, how are you planning to defeat the enemy?
Decide today to start memorizing scripture. Write it down, read it aloud and meditate on it. Yes, it takes some effort but it is well worth it. Many have spent years studying, reading and preparing for a degree in order to have a career. Why not put the same effort into something that has eternal value?
Hide the Word in your heart - make it a part of who you are. It can never be taken away from you!

I am currently working on memorizing a large portion of scripture. I have never done this before. A verse here and there no problem. but I am really struggling right now. I know and understand the importance of knowing the Word of God, please say a prayer for me! :)
ReplyDeleteI used to pick a scripture a week and try to memorize it in the seven days. Such a good practice. My quiet times have been erratic with our chaotic living arrangement during the renovation but this is something I should try again. Selecting calming, peace-filled verses.
