Random Dozen #4

1. Tell me the absolute best way to watch a movie. I like to watch DVDs at home, in my comfy clothes, on my couch with my feet propped up. I like my whole family to be there watching with me to hear all my lame comments about the movie. I also like to have my iced tea and a snack of some kind to munch on while watching.

2. Do you ever think about your own funeral? If so, do you have specific ideas about how you would like it to be? Sadly enough, yes, I do think about my own funeral. I would like eulogies. I would like a video montage of my life hopefully using pictures that always showed me at my best (okay, I'm asking for the impossible here). I would like some of my favorite songs sung like "Come Morning" by the Nelons. There is one by Mercy Me I really like - the title escapes me at the moment. I used to want "Go Rest High on That Mountain" but it's been done to death. Seriously, I'd like the gospel message to be preached. Wouldn't it be awesome to have someone accept Christ at my home-going?

3. Are you more of a giver or a taker? Over all, I think it's about equal ...

4. Vacations: planned activities and schedules, or play it by ear? Oh, I always want to play it by ear. My everyday life is scheduled to the max, so it's a relief to not have to do something at a certain time. Of course, since I don't schedule vacation time, a lot of times things I wanted to do or see didn't get done because I ran out of time ...

5. What is one often overlooked item in your home that needs to be cleaned regularly? Ceilings - I always forget about cobwebs.

6. Name a cause that means a lot to you. Abortion. I'm firmly anti-abortion. If you don't want your baby, be unselfish enough to carry the baby to term and then let someone who is aching for a child adopt the baby.

7. Do you eat a regular old peanut butter jelly sandwich, or do you customize it? And by the way, jelly or no jelly? How could a sandwich be a pbj without jelly? I like to use blueberry jelly instead of plain old grape. I'm refined like that.

8. If we were having a conversation in person, how would I know if you were nervous? If nervous, I run out of breath, or my voice gets shaky. Oh wait, that's when I sing. I guess, if just talking and I get nervous, I say lame things.

9. Do you have an elaborate bedtime routine, or just the basics of toothbrushing and jammies? I must read a little something every night before I fall asleep.

10. Have you ever regretted something you wrote on your blog? Not so far ...

11. Has anyone ever told you that you look like a famous person or celebrity? Did you agree? No ....

12. If you were going to dedicate a song to a loved one or friend, what would the song be and to whom would it be dedicated? "You Light Up My Life" to my hubby and daughters because my life without them would be very dark ...

What's On Your Mind '09 - Photo of the Month

The cross you see in the picture above is built on top of a hill called Bald Knob. This cross can be seen from miles around. While driving the hilly winding roads below the cross, you can catch glimpses of it periodically. It shines brightly amongst the green trees. A silent witness.

When I snapped this picture, some of the tiles were taken off the cross to be replaced with new gleaming tiles. I do like this picture though, because even though there is damage to the cross, it still stands. It still proclaims the message. It makes all who pass nearby acknowledge the cross. If ever a person had heard the gospel message, a Bald Knob Cross sighting reminds them of the story.

If a person saw that cross, and didn't know of Christ's sacrifice, he might wonder what was so special about a cross that someone would go to all the trouble and expense of erecting such a structure. Maybe he would ask someone ... I pray there would be a person prepared to share what that cross means to God's children.

How special the image of a cross is to us because it makes us remember the sacrifice Jesus made for each of us. The perfect sinless Son took all the wrong-doing that wretched man could dish out and put it on His account. He paid the price so that we could go free. Talk about the deal of the century -- this was the bargain for all time! You could never get a sweeter offer than that!

All He asks is that you believe He did it and that He is who He says He is. Ask Him to add your name to the list of those who have admitted their wrong-doing and asked Him to be the Lord of their lives. Then follow Him.

Be a witness for Him. Sometimes like the Bald Knob Cross, just looking at you and where you stand can be a witness. Unlike the Cross, you may have opportunity to be a vocal witness.

Either way, be ready.

The Simple Woman's Daybook - September 28, 2009

FOR TODAY, SEPTEMBER 28th EDITION...

Outside my window... a cool clear morning, fall weather is coming!

I am thinking... on a phrase I heard this weekend: "Activity brings thirst." The more I do for God, the thirstier for Him I get.

I am thankful for... cooler weather which eventually means no a/c bill!

From the kitchen... oven fried chicken tenders tonight.

I am wearing... my favorite brown dress pants and a peach jacket I found yard - saleing.

I am creating... places to put my yard sale goodies.

I am going... make an effort to spend more time in prayer.

I am reading... nothing right now. Time to pick out a new book!

I am hoping... to see some answered prayers soon.

I am hearing... the clock ticking.

Around the house... some coupon clipping to be done!

One of my favorite things... the color burgundy.

A few plans for the rest of the week: a little studying on Philippians, making a better organized grocery list.

Here is picture for thought I am sharing...

This makes me think of a line from that poem, "Only God Can Make A Tree." (Joyce Kilmer)

Friday's Fave Five - September 25, 2009

Is it Friday again? Wow, unbelievable! It's time for Friday's Fave Five, hosted by Susanne at Living to Tell the Story, a time to reflect and pick five favorites from our week.

My week was just a regular week with nothing special happening in it. Yet, I can always find some favorites in there!

1. Sunday, my class studied one of my favorite subjects, "The Armor of God." We had good discussion and there was a lot of participation. Definitely a favorite!

2. Monday, it was back to work for me after having a week off. I do love my job, and I'm thankful to have one. Another favorite!

3. Tuesday, I made one of my favorite recipes that I got from Kym at Kympossible, Black Bottom Banana Bread. Here's the recipe:

Black-Bottom Banana Bars
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1-1/2 cups mashed ripe bananas (about 3)
1-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup baking cocoa Cream butter and sugar; add egg and vanilla; beat thoroughly. Blend in the bananas. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; add to the creamed mixture and mix well. Divide batter in half, and add cocoa to half. Spread the cocoa batter in a greased 13x9 pan. Spoon remaining batter on top and swirl a little with a knife. Bake at 350* for 25 minutes. Cool and frost if desired

4. Wednesday was sort of a bewildering day with lots going on. At almost the last moment, I found out I was needed to fill in leading worship. I'm a big believer in doing whatever you are asked to do, it's part of servanthood, being like Jesus, but I also believe in being prepared and I was feeling a little frazzled. Yet, when we actually started worship I felt calmness and peace come into the sanctuary. People were entering into worship instead of just sitting there and that is always a big favorite with me!

5. Another favorite is Fridays! I love Fridays because we can wear jeans that day, it's payday, and because of this meme. It is my favorite of all the memes I participate in. I love all the people that participate and I love to visit their blogs.

Thankful Thursday - Simplicity

This week's hostess for Thankful Thursday, Laurie, at Women Taking a Stand, has chosen simplicity as the theme.

I'm thankful that the gospel is simple! The good news is that all you have to do to be accepted by God is admit you have fallen short, believe that Jesus died for you and rose from dead to live making intercession for you, confess it and change your direction (or repent is the Christianese term for it.) He'll even help you with the "change" part!

It's as simple as ABC - admit, believe, confess!

Isn't it wonderful that you don't have to jump through a bunch of hoops, or keep a long list of rules, or pay thousands of dollars to become a child of God? If that were true, I'd be in trouble!

9"That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." Romans 10:9-10

It's simple, and I am thankful!

Random Dozen

1. Please share one middle school memory. It can be good, bad, ugly, funny. Pictures or words, I don't care, just share.

Hmm... I have much more traumatic memories of high school, but I do remember being assigned to the boys' gym class by mistake in 7th grade. They thought Jerri was a boy! Can you believe it?

2. What's your favorite Beatles song?

When I first heard the Beatles, I was very very young and thought "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was the greatest. Looking back, now I think I like the song, "Yesterday," the best.

3. If I asked you to describe your most comfortable outfit, what would it be?

Are we talking most comfortable outfit I would wear to work or I would wear at home? At work my favorite is my brown dress pants with a brown, white, yellow and lime green tunic. It's comfy and I love to wear lime green. At home, I have a certain pair of denim capris and a hot pink Tshirt that feel so good when I put them on. I'm constantly laundering them and putting them right back on.

4. Would you rather host a party or be a guest?

Definitely be a guest. I have issues when it comes to hosting a party ...

5. Do you think we will move completely from traditional books to digital ones, and if we do, are you OK with that?

I think there will always be traditional books; otherwise, how could you read in the bathtub or in bed? I would never want to live in a world without books to actually hold in my hand.

6. Do you learn best by reading, listening or experiencing?

Before computers, I would have said that I learn best by reading, because I can look at a page and memorize what is there and even what side of the page it is on. When it comes to computers; however, I learn by experiencing. If someone shows me how to do something on the computer, I can't remember the next time I try to do it. If I follow along step by step, pushing all the buttons myself, I come much closer to being able to do it solo on my next attempt.

7. If you are (or when you were) single, what is the kiss of death for you concerning the opposite sex? (That is, what is one trait or behavior or habit or anything at all that immediately turns you off from considering that person a potential match for you?)

This is an easy question for me to answer, I cannot stand someone who curses. One curse word and there would be no second date.

8. Snacks. Salty or sweet?

Overall, salty, except for those times that I can get me some chocolate!

9. Look around you in a four foot radius. What object is around you that you didn't realize was there or forgot was there? How long has it been there?

A dummies book of Office XP. It's been there a month or more ... (I've never opened it!)

10. What is your favorite Tom Cruise movie?

Mission Impossible. I love books and flicks about spies! Don't worry though, I could never be a spy, I'm too unobservant. (See question above.)

11. You buy a bottle of shampoo and discover that you don't like what it does to your hair at all. What do you do with that full bottle?

I use it to clean my toilet. After all, as Flylady says, soap is soap.

12. Your favorite Fall comfort food? (Last week it was beverage.)

I start serving chili as soon as it is cool weather.

The Simple Woman's Daybook - September 21, 2009

FOR TODAY, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st EDITION...

Outside my window... fog.
I am thinking... it's back to work for me. I've got to get back into my routine after having a week off at home.
I am thankful for... paid vacations!
From the kitchen... today will be fresh green beans and potatoes with pork chops
I am wearing... my favorite brown dress pants with brown, white, yellow and lime green tunic.
I am creating... treasures from my yard sale finds.
I am going... on a Wal-Mart run after work ...
I am reading... nothing right now. I'm caught up, so I will be picking up something new at the church library on my lunch hour.
I am hoping... to get everything caught up at work by Wednesday. It's good to have a goal, right?
I am hearing... silence.
Around the house... more laundry to do!
One of my favorite things... crossing everything off my to-do list. (I got pretty close while I was home on vacation ...)
A few plans for the rest of the week: studying Philippians for my Sunday School class, getting ready for a board meeting on Thursday, finishing up last week's to-do list!
Here is picture for thought I am sharing...

This is another picture from May 2009 that I took while on one of our bike rides. Sometimes I don't realize how pretty the area that I live in is until I see the pictures I took of the landscapes.

Friday's Fave Five - September 18, 2009

Yeah! It's Friday again! Time to reflect on my week and share 5 highlights:

1. I love a parade! Saturday, we went to a local festival and my daughter's school marched in the parade. Here she is, on the right, waving a flag:

2. I love a week at home! I took one of my vacation weeks off and spent it at my favorite place in the world: home. I took time to reorganize several areas and then I would just bask in the atmosphere of a clutter-free zone!

3. I love fall decor! I like to change my decor to match the seasons. Below is a picture of my kitchen table with my favorite table runner on it:

I also love the little leaf votive candle holders that I got at Kirklands when I visited Nashville this summer.

4. I love a day out with my hubby! On Wednesday, my husband and I took off to a town about an hour away and went to some favorites: Home Depot and Mackie's Pizza. We loaded up on various paints for some of our decorating projects, and then, since buying home improvement items made us hungry, we went to Mackie's and ordered our favorite supreme pizza that includes thinly sliced apples! You wouldn't believe it, but those apples taste great amongst the mushrooms, peppers, onions, sausage and cheeses! I'm making myself hungry again thinking about it.

5. I love attending a Jeff and Sheri Easter concert! Later that same day, we headed over to another town about 20 miles away. They were having an apple festival complete with rides and all the carnival foods you could want. Of course, Jim had to have a funnel cake. The highlight of the evening was a concert by southern gospel artists, Jeff and Sheri Easter. I just love them. Not only are they talented singers, but so friendly and personable and funny! They performed many of my favorites, especially "Life is Great and Getting Better."

That's my week in a nutshell. I've really enjoyed being off. Monday, it's back to work for me, and I'm glad that I do love my job.

Why don't you share your favorites with us? Link up at Susanne's Living to Tell the Story, and we'll all come visit you!

Thankful Thursday - His Masterpiece

Today's Thankful Thursday hostess, Laurie at Women Taking a Stand, has chosen the topic, "We are His Masterpiece" using Ephesians 2:10 as the illustrating scripture:

"We are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago."

I love this scripture! My Sunday School class is right now finishing up our study of the book of Ephesians. I remember when we learned in chapter 2 that the word used for masterpiece, the ancient Greek word "poiema," translated workmanship in other translations, actually means His beautiful poem! The Jerusalem Bible translates it as "work of art."

YOU are a beautiful poem, a work of art! Camp on that thought awhile ...

If you're like me, most days I don't feel like a work of art, but it is a process. God is molding and shaping us into what only He can see as the finished product. Molding and shaping can hurt!

I remember years back, it was popular for church kids to sing the song, "I am a Promise with a Capital P." One line in the song goes like this: "I am a great big bundle of potentiality!"

God alone knows our potential. It is an exciting thing for those of us who have been His child for awhile to look back and see how far we have come in this process of becoming what He envisions. As Joyce Meyer says, "I may not be what I should be, but thank God, I'm not what I was!"

Today, I'm thankful that He is leading me on my journey to what He has planned for me. I know that He has planned good things for me to do because Ephesians 2:10 says so. I can rest in that even when that molding and shaping is pinching me and making me feel uncomfortable!

The Simple Woman's Daybook - September 14, 2009

FOR TODAY, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th EDITION...

Outside my window... a slightly overcast day.

I am thinking... of the scripture I read this morning:

"... be imitators of God (copy Him and follow His example) as well-beloved children (imitate their father.)" Ephesians 5:1 AMP

I don't know about you, but when I was a little girl I wanted to do everything my daddy did. It always tickled me if someone told me that I looked just like my daddy. I should have that same attitude about Abba Father.

I am thankful for... a week off work!

From the kitchen... chicken and dumplings.

I am wearing...my favorite blue jean capris and an aqua T-shirt.

I am creating... treasures out of some of my yard sale goodies. Stay tuned for pictures in upcoming days.

I am going... nowhere today! I'm having a blessed day at home.

I am reading... I just finished re-reading Catherine Marshall's "Christy," one of my all-time favorite books.

I am hoping...to get some projects done during my week off, but also to rest and relax - which is very hard for me!

I am hearing... the breezes in the trees across the road because I get to have my windows open. It's only 68 degrees right now!

Around the house... so many things to be done I can hardly list them. I don't understand anyone that gets bored at home. There are so many things to do! (And, I did used to be a stay at home mom and led a very full and happy life.)

One of my favorite things... saving money and I'm hoping to get better at doing so.

A few plans for the rest of the week: attending a Jeff and Sheri Easter concert, the farmer's market, yard sale-ing, and attending a John Starnes concert.

Here is picture for thought I am sharing...

This is another photo I took of the place where my dad grew up.

However, the pond wasn't there when he was a boy.

Friday's Fave Five - September 11, 2009

It's time for Friday's Fave Five - a time to reflect on the highlights in our week.

1. A place for everything: I love order, and nothing makes me happier than having my house in order. A couple of days this week, when I came home from work, I noticed that the kitchen was picked up, no dishes in the sink, the countertops and sinks were gleaming. When I leave in the mornings, I try to leave the kitchen spotless. It's great to come home and see that the family maintained it! That makes me feel like cooking dinner!

2. Sunflowers: I noticed in my kitchen this morning that I have a lot of sunflower decorations. I love decorating in the kitchen with sunflowers. Also, I always want yellow walls in my kitchen; I just feel that sunny yellow lifts my spirits.

3. Saving money: I recently started couponing to save on that dreaded grocery bill. I found a couple of pretty good deals this week. I was excited!

4. Grapes: I love grapes - my whole family does - and today they are 99 cents a pound at Kroger. I will be buying a bunch. My favorites are the red grapes, but I'll eat green, too. (I know Susanne said grapes are one of her faves last week, but I love them, too!)

5. A day at home: Monday was Labor Day for those of us who live in the States. It was a great day for me of just relaxing at home, puttering around the house doing this and that, and working on a couple of decorating projects. I even slept in until 9 a.m.! For me, that is an accomplishment!

So, how did your week go? Link up over at Susanne's Living to Tell the Story and tell us about it!

Thankful Thursday - Undeserved Kindness

This month's Thankful Thursday, Laurie at Women Taking A Stand, has chosen the theme of undeserved kindness for this week's post.

I have been a recipient of much kindness through the years, especially during the time my husband first became disabled. I remember in particular two different instances:

We had applied for disability. During the long wait to see if my husband would receive disability, our only income was from my part-time job. A couple of times, our pastor came to us with money given to him to be passed along to us anonymously. What kindness!

Also, during that time, a group of men, from our home church and also from the church that I worked for, got together and put a badly needed new roof on our home. One of the church boards voted to cover half the cost of the shingles!
We'll never forget it!

These things really helped us financially, but even more, they evidenced the fact that God was concerned about us and moved among hearts of His people to help us. This was really important because the enemy had been whispering in my mind that God didn't care about us or He would heal my husband. I still don't know why the Lord has not healed my husband so far, yet now I know that He is concerned about our needs.

Most of all, I thank God for not treating me as I deserve. That's the ultimate act of kindness!

"He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve." Psalm 103:10

I deserve nothing good. My goodness on my best day still falls way short of perfection. Yet, He loves me because I accepted His free gift of salvation. Now I'm His child and He extends His grace to me. I'm so thankful!

Friday's Fave Five - September 4, 2009

It's time for Friday's Fave Five once again. FFF is a time where we recall highlights from our week and list our favorites.

1. Hot tea: Now that the mornings are cooler, I've been enjoying my favorite morning beverage. Hot tea is just so soothing to sip while I have my morning devotions.

2. Texas Sheet Cake: Today is our daughter Janae's 18th birthday and her requested birthday cake is my favorite, Texas Sheet Cake! Mmmm... love that fudgy goodness.

3. Favorite pics of Janae: Our daughter is blessed in that she is very photogenic and takes great pictures. I have a lot of favorite photos of her, but today I'm sharing a favorite baby photo:

and a favorite recent picture (from Easter 2009):

Some things never change ... notice that she tilts her head in the same direction in both pics?

4. Favorite New Quote: "Life is an endless struggle full of frustrations and challenges, but eventually you find a hair stylist you like" Author Unknown

which brings me to my last fave of the week:

5. Humor! I love to laugh and funny stories and quotes are precious to me. If I can laugh, I can feel good no matter how crummy my week may be. I always think a sermon goes over better if you can get your point across with humor.

How did your week go?

Thankful Thursday - Slow Down

This month's Thankful Thursday hostess, Laurie from Women Taking a Stand, chose the topic "Slow Down and Spend Time in His Presence." Wow, how timely! (How did you know, Laurie, that I needed to hear that?)

Yesterday I came home stressed out! I have a ton of stuff to do and less than two weeks to get it done. I felt so zapped. How in the world could I do this? And to think that right in the middle of this two week period, we have Labor Day coming with a day off!

Actually, I see now that having Monday off is God's provision for me. I can rest up that day to have the strength to get through the next 4 days!

I have been asked to lead the worship for next month's Ladies' Retreat. I have been thinking about how we are so busy we don't really take time to worship. When we come to church, the attitude is, "ok, lets do three songs and get worship out of the way and hopefully Pastor won't preach too long so we can get back home and do the next thing." I'm hoping to prepare the atmosphere so that we will take awhile to do worship. Spend time in His presence - perhaps without even singing! (Did you know that singing is not the only way to worship?)

Today, I'm thankful for Laurie's timely word, "slow down." I'm also thankful that we have the privilege of coming into His presence whenever we want. We don't have to go through the High Priest. The veil into the Holy of Holies has been rent, ladies! We can come approach the throne boldly to find grace and help in time of need!

What more can we ask?

What's On Your Mind '09 - Why Do I Blog?

I'm excited that the meme, "What's On Your Mind, '09" has resumed after a summer hiatus. The topic today is, "Why do I Blog?"

When I first started blogging I was excited about doing so because I felt it was a platform to share some of my devotionals that I had written. I also thought it was a great exercise to be intentional about writing more often. I dream of being a writer but often lack discipline to just sit down and type. I write a lot of things in my head as I drive to work everyday but neglect to actually get it down on paper.

As time has went on and I learned more about the blogosphere, I found so many things I was interested in. I discovered the world of memes and how each meme had a community of its own. I wanted to be a part of nearly every one I found!

I have read articles on how to successfully blog and been told, "give your blog a voice. Write on that topic because that is what your readers want to hear."

The truth is my blog is eclectic because that is how I am! I can't just talk about one thing because I am a sum of all the things I'm interested in.

Lately, I've been thinking about the "Total Woman." I know that is a name of a book a lady wrote a long time ago. (I think the author was Marabel Morgan.) I read it, but can't really remember but a couple of irrelevant things about it. However, I love the concept. We are not just spiritual beings, but physical and emotional, too.

I want my blog to address the total, or complete, woman. Today's women are complicated, driven beings. Most of us are wives, mothers, homemakers, career women, servants of God, involved in our church, hobby enthusiasts -- the list goes on and on. I want to speak to those issues.

I'm also in agreement with Shane who said she blogs for community. I have met some awesome people in the blogging world. I love to read their thoughts. Some of them have even sent me snail mail! And when they visit my blog, and I get feedback on something I posted, it makes my day.

Commmunity is a great thing. God didn't make us to be lone rangers. We need each other's input.

To sum up the question: the reason I blog is to give AND to receive. Seems like a pretty good deal!

To read what others had to say about this subject, visit Shane at Heart Reflections.

Tasty Tuesday - Orange Chicken

I've been asked to share the recipe for Orange Chicken that I use. I actually have combined two recipes to come up with Orange Chicken.

First,

8 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, cut into 1/2 inch strips

2 1/4 C all-purpose flour

1/4 C cornstarch

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp ground white pepper

1 1/2 C water

1 qt. vegetable oil for frying.

Combine flour, cornstarch, salt, white pepper. Add 1 1/2 C water gradually to make a thick batter. (Batter is VERY thick. I'm thinking about thinning it some.) Stir to blend thoroughly. Add chicken pieces, and stir until chicken is well coated. Heat oil in skillet or wok to 360 degrees F. Fry chicken pieces in hot oil until golden. Remove chicken and drain on paper towels.

Orange Sauce:

1/3 C brown sugar

1/3 C orange juice (if diabetic, use orange flavored diet soda)

1/3 C vinegar

1/3 C orange marmalade (use sugar free if diabetic)

1 Tbsp cornstarch

1 Tbsp low sodium soy sauce

1/8 tsp. ground ginger

Combine all ingredients. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally til it boils, thickens, and clears. Best to use whisk to stir.

Pour over chicken. Bake at 350 for 30 mins. (Or do as I do, and nuke it for about 7 mins.) Serve over rice.
For other fab recipes, visit Jen at Balancing Beauty and Bedlam.
