Friday's Fave Five #162



Hello, friends.  I'm late posting about my week, Fridays can sometimes be crazy for a church secretary. Nevertheless, I wanted to be sure and post since I missed last Friday.  God has been good to me these last couple weeks and I want to be sure people know it!

1.  Right after my last FFF post, a sweet friend came bringing me a bouquet of her roses.  They were gorgeous!  She said they came from her "knock-out" rose bush.  This bush has blooms all season long.  Now I know what bush I want to add to our landscaping plans for next year!


2.  It was nice to have that note of cheeriness, because the next day, I did a dumb thing.  I had locked up the church and was getting into the van when I noticed something had fallen to the floor on the other side.  Thinking I was unlocking all the doors so I could go around to the other side, instead I locked all the doors.  I discovered this as soon as I shut the door with my keys laying on the seat!  Here I was, no keys, phone or money, and the church was locked up as well. What to do?  The neighbor, who normally sits out on his carport all day long, was gone! Long story short, I ended up walking to a gas station and after SIX collect calls connected up with my daughter who came and picked me up.

How is this a highlight, you ask?  I only had to experience 2 hours of being without any phone, money, or coat!  What about those who live that way everyday?   I'm so blessed and I am very very thankful.

3.  Fall decorations:  I had to show off my hutch decorated for fall:



Do you see my adorable cow creamer?  I love that thing!



Mostly here you can see my fall linens.  It doesn't show up well, but the centerpiece is a wire pumpkin with 6 votive cups in it.  It looks really cool lit up.


4.  Another little test happened last week.  I was coming home from a board meeting and hit a deer with my beloved blue van.  I was not hurt and it was surely a blessing because the road where it happened is a dangerous curvy road where fields are about 5-10 feet below the road. A road that has no guardrails. It would be easy to veer off the road and flip out into the field.  God kept His hand on me and I was safe.

I asked all my friends to pray that the insurance company would not total my van.  A prayer to which God said no. However, it all worked out.  The insurance company settled with us for more than we thought.  Our body man said he could fix the van for less than the insurance settlement. So we bought back our van from the insurance company and it is being restored.  Soon, I will be "back on the road again."

5.  The last thing is something I've been waiting for awhile.  The very last thing scheduled in rebuilding our house.  The shutters were installed!

And so, our remodeling job is done ... for now.  In the spring, we would like to do some landscaping.  Perhaps in the future, an addition of a dining room and garage?  We shall see ...

22 Things

Today, I'm joining in at Mama Kat's and sharing a list of 22 things I've done.  I'm not sure I can come up with that many interesting things but I will give it a try.


I'm 55 years old, and in my lifetime, I've:

1. Ridden in a brand new lipstick red '65 Mustang (My dad owned one briefly.  He thought it would motivate my mother into learning to drive a stick shift.  Wrong!)

2. Taken violin lessons

3. Broken my arm three different times, thereby nullifying the said violin lessons.

4. Been in a wreck where the vehicle flipped over, smashing out a window and pinning my hair beneath the vehicle.

5.  Had my husband whack my hair off with his penknife during that same wreck.

6.  Struggled with infertility for 10 years. Now, I've ...

7.  Given birth 3 times.

8.  Had 3 daughters.

9. Became a mother-in-law.

10. Had different jobs in my life.  I've been a clerk at two different courthouses,

11.  Been a Dental Receptionist

12.  Been a Legal Secretary

13.  Worked in customer service at a Bank - twice!

14. Worked in my current profession for 15 years - I'm a church secretary, and I love it!

15. Dealt with my husband's bipolar disorder for over 20 years now.  We're hanging in there!  Thank God, the doctor finally found the right combination of medications.

16.Been a Blogger since May of 2008.

17. Co-hosted a Southern Gospel Music room with my husband in 2002.

18.  Been in Amway.

19.  Taught the Young Adult Sunday School Class at my church for 7 years.

20.  Become one of the worship leaders for my church.

21.  Been the first woman deaconess elected in my church.  (See, my life is all about church!)

22. Been a flood survivor.

This took some thought ... I'm afraid the list I HAVEN'T done is way longer!  I'm thinking I might need to make a "bucket list," and try some new things.

Tea Talk


Feel like having tea with me?

1. I'm having... my morning hot tea (Twinings Irish Breakfast Tea) in my giraffe print mug.  I just love animal prints! 






2. I'm feeling.... compassion for Ruth and the people of Thailand - I've been through a flood myself.  I know what an ordeal it is.

3. On my mind.... it seems unbelievable, but a lot of good things came out of the flood. Our house is better off since it has been totally rebuilt.  We learned some great spiritual truths as well.  For one thing, we know now beyond a shadow of a doubt that our Lord loves us and will work things out if we trust Him.  For us, it was a real living example of Romans 8:28 at work!

4. A line, a verse, or a quotation to encourage the readers (and yourself):

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 NIV

Can I share one more? (Again, because I used this in an earlier post - but it's so good!)

"Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place."  2 Cor. 2:14 KJV

This doesn't mean we always come out ahead materially, but in some way we are better off after going through a trial. Then we should testify of how God brought us through triumphantly and the fragrance of His goodness will be everywhere!

Simple Woman's Daybook, October 25, 2011


I'm a little late on doing the Daybook this week, but it's better late than never ...


FOR TODAY, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25


Outside my window..
. a warm fall day.

I am thinking...
of how blessed I am.  God has been really good to me.

I am thankful
...no one was hurt when I hit a deer last week.  No one but the deer, and my van, that is ...

In the kitchen... baked barbecue chicken.  It's all ready to go into the oven!

I am wearing
...I'm wearing light brown pants and brown cardigan with a ruby red shirt.  Brown boots.  And I am hot.  I should have worn something cooler ...

I am creating
... nothing right now ...

I am going
... to believe 2 Cor. 2:14 "Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ,"  In other words, He causes me to come out of a trial in triumph - better off than before I went through it.

I am wondering
...why I love organizing so much?  It just makes me happy of thinking of a new way to arrange things that works better. Too bad I don't have a job doing that all day!

I am reading
... a "Bug Man" novel - "Shoofly Pie" by Tim Downs.  I'm having a little trouble getting into it. It's definitely different than the usual book I read!

I am hoping
... my van can be fixed.  I love that van! And, it's paid for!

I am looking forward to
...having this problem behind me.

I am hearing
...some mowing going on.  Could this be the last mowing of the season?

Around the house...fall decor.  I love it!

I am pondering
...what I can do to make a certain relationship better ...

One of my favorite things
...scented candles.  It will soon be cool enough to light them all the time.

Friday's Fave Five 161


Hello, you special person!  (If you read my blog, I consider you special!)  It's been a glorious week here in the heartland of America.  Let's get right to sharing some of the gifts God has given this week:

1.  Splendid beautiful fall nature scenes:  On Saturday, my wonderful hubby and I took a drive to a nearby park and photographed some of the marvelous outdoors.

2.  Next, I just had a really good work week.  You know, the kind where everyday seems to pass smoothly. It was interesting and busy but no problems.  Love weeks like those!

3.  Monthly visit to hair salon:  It's a blessing when you have someone who does your hair just the way you want it.  And she is a great hair stylist.  I'm so glad I found her.  Thanks, Terri, for all you do.

Fight

I'm upset.  Last night, I heard about a fallen brother.  I knew he fell because he very publicly announced it on facebook.

I have to say, I was shocked.  Of all people to fall!  He was a worshipper.  (I've watched him with my own eyes go to the altar and dance before the Lord with joy.) He was raised to love God.  He has great parents who have raised him up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. He's a very smart and talented individual.  His test scores were so high that he got a free ride to the college of his choice.

What went wrong?

I asked God about this. The Holy Spirit reminded me of this scripture:

"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." Psalm 119:11

Yes, being a worshiper is a great thing.  The bible tells us that the Lord inhabits the praises of His people, and worshiping brings His presence near us.  It's very important, but it's knowing the word that keeps you from sinning.

The basic tenets taught to new believers is church attendance, prayer and bible reading.  Those disciplines in turn enable us to do works and to witness.

Now, I have no doubt that this young man knew the Word, had heard it many times.  What happened, though, when he left home and went to college?  If he is like a lot of our young people, the first thing to happen was he quit going to church, stopped praying and stopped reading the bible.  It probably wasn't a deliberate thing, probably a gradual sliding away due to his new lifestyle.  After all, it's hard to find a new church home all by yourself!  How welcoming are our churches to college students, anyway?

The question came to my mind, "How many were praying for him that he would stand strong as a Christian in his new life?"  Well ... I'm sure his parents were praying for him, surely his church family was praying,  but it never occurred to me to pray.  I hardly know him!  Then I wondered, how many of us in my own church family are praying for our children? All right, let's get down to the brass tacks - am I praying for the other believers I know?

We need to be in prayer for all our brothers and sisters in Christ!

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" 1Peter 5:8

Young believers are vulnerable.  In fact, ALL believers can be attacked.  Matthew 24:24 tells us:

"For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect."

The very elect - believers that you and I know.  In fact, it could be that you or I could be deceived.

Child of God, we are in a battle.  It seems that we forget that we are warriors and want to take life easy.  We need to remember that we are not home yet.  We need to be doing those basic tenets daily and with vigor!  Pray like we have never prayed before, study and take up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and do battle.

Our brothers and sisters need us to engage in spiritual warfare like never before. It's time to "man-up" and fight!


"Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love." 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

The Simple Woman's Daybook, October 11, 2011



FOR TODAY, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11


Outside my window... an overcast fall morning - rain is forecast for tomorrow.

I am thinking...about the things I love to do.  What things make me the most happy?  Bible Study, organizing, and writing would be my top 3.  I also love home decor, photographing landscapes, thrifting, recipes, tablescaping and humor!  Is there anyway to incorporate all the things I love into one blog?  I'm always hearing advice about finding your niche in the blogworld ... I don't know if I can just talk about one subject ... or maybe I need to have more than one blog.

I am thankful... all the things I'm interested in, though.  How boring would life be if one had nothing that made them excited!

In the kitchen... meatloaf, and I'm going to try a new recipe for potatoes. If it's good, I'll share the recipe and the link..

I am wearing... brown dress pants and cami, brown and pink ruffly tunic.

I am creating... my life.  How I want it to be fruitful!

I am going... to try to increase how much water I drink.

I am wondering...what God has in store for me next.

I am reading...book 4 in Sally John's series, The Other Way Home, "THE WINDING ROAD HOME."  It's pretty good.

I am hoping... to please God in everything I do.

I am looking forward to... the weekend.  I love weekends!

I am hearing... so much about the importance of prayer.  I feel God impressing on me and our church that right now we are to be busy praying.

Around the house... I've put out a few fall decorations. It's my favorite time of the year!  (I know ... I've already said that a bunch of times.)

I am pondering...why my most-read post is my recipe for pressure cooker green bean dinner!

One of my favorite things
...scented candles.  I got a new fragrance at Big Lots the other day:  cranberry fig.  Smells so yummy!

A few plans for the rest of the week: work on my next bible lesson (praying for inspiration!), scheduled for a haircut Thursday, and some more of that dreaded filing to be done!

Friday's Fave Five #160



Hey y'all!  (I'm from the South and that's the standard greeting in Darby, Florida.)  I hope you had a great week.

1.  I found the perfect rug to match my beloved zebra pillows this week:




See?  Animal print, but not so much as to be overwhelming!



2.  My awesome fantastic hubby painted our new door burgundy this week:




Burgundy shutters are in the plans.  Maybe next week ...

3.  Ever since the flood, our furnace did not want to work.  Of course, we haven't needed it, but now that fall has come, we knew we needed to get it fixed.  We had a repairman come out and put a new gas valve on it, but he seemed really frustrated and it only worked one time while he was there.  We didn't really want to call him back.  We called another repairman who suggested our furnace might be too old to be worth fixing.  After much prayer, my husband called the first repairman back and he fixed it within 5 minutes! And didn't charge us!

4.  On Thursday, I read the devotional from Turning Point by David Jeremiah and I really loved what he said:

"We're in a battle, and our enemy is on the attack. We need to resist him. Satan can't stand the hymns of the faith, so sing. He can't overcome the prayers of the saints, so pray. He can't defeat the Lord Jesus Christ, so claim the power of the Blood. He can't overthrow the truth, so quote the Scriptures. He can't vanquish the joy of the Lord, so rejoice. He can't divert God's grace, so use the shield of faith. We must use the weapons God has given us. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you."

I'm so thankful for the weapons He has given us - and it's not hard to use them.  Sing, pray, claim, quote, rejoice, use your faith.  He has given us a voice, so let us use it!

5. I'm loving these beautiful fall days!  The hubs and I have planned to go out Saturday and enjoy the fall beauty.  Hope you have an opportunity to do the same.

This World Is Not My Home, So What Am I Supposed To Do? (Part 2)



Last week, we discussed how we are to be different from the world, aliens if you will. (Click here if you want to read part one first.) Today we are going to talk about our purpose in life.

But first, a review of our text:

Titus 2:11-15: For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
 15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

And Titus 3:1-8, This section is entitled "Saved in Order to Do Good"
 1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.
 3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

As Martin Luther said, we Christians live in two kingdoms: the kingdom of God and the kingdom of man. But our primary citizenship is in the kingdom of God. We are resident aliens here, strangers and pilgrims.

Paul addressed the subject of how we should live as strangers in this world in his letter to Titus, chapter 3 verses 1-8.

First, he recaps how we should behave:

We should submit to and obey secular rulers.  Titus 3:1-2 tells us we are to be good citizens - scratch that, we should be the BEST citizens.  We obey the law and honor those in authority over us.  We don't slander others - Obama bashing is wrong!


Also, we are to be kind, peaceful, humble and courteous.  Rudeness is a no-no!

"Being strangers and pilgrims means that we are to try and imitate our Lord, [think WWJD] who when reviled, reviled not again; who suffered punishment patiently, though He was innocent. It means living deliberately, conscious that others are watching us and listening to us. We are to be kind, patient, peaceful, humble and courteous to everyone God brings in our path."  [Quinton Morrow “Strangers and Pilgrims"]

Recall our life before Christ: [read Titus 3:3] "Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other."


This is not the only place that Paul reminds us of our former lives and conduct:


1 Cor. 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,  10Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.  11And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.


David Guzik said, "Remembering where we once were shows us that the fallen nature is not so far from us, and we need constant reminding to stay where we should be in the Lord."


It’s so very easy to become self-righteous! We should remember that but for the grace of God, we would be in the same condition.


Praise God, He rescued us: It wasn’t anything we did that redeemed us – good works DO NOT save us. It’s only through the sacrifice that Christ in His mercy made:


Titus 3:4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.


So what do I do while I’m waiting to go to heaven?


I like this quote:  “The theology of Christianity is based on grace; the ethics of Christianity are based on gratitude.” (Briscoe)


We show gratitude. We do good works!


Yes that’s right – we are to be do-gooders.  I’m actually supposed to be what my cousins used to torment me by calling me a “goody goody two-shoes!”  (Anyone know where that weird phrase comes from?)


Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do


Not only that but Titus 2:14 tells us to be “…eager to do what is good.”  Actively seek out something to do that is good!


The NLT for this verse says:  totally committed to doing good deeds.” [reminds me of the story about the hen and the pig being committed to give their owner a good breakfast.  For the hen, it was all in a day’s work, but for the pig, it was total commitment.  Are we totally committed to giving our all? Christ gave His all!]


[MSG Titus 2:14] He offered himself as a sacrifice to free us from a dark, rebellious life into this good, pure life, making us a people he can be proud of, energetic in goodness.
I like this – energetic.  Don’t do good deeds for the Lord half-heartedly.  Put your all into it!


The Amplified puts it like this:  “eager and enthusiastic about [living a life that is good and filled with] beneficial deeds.”


Don’t you just love eager and enthusiastic people?  Their enthusiasm makes them attractive, gives them an inner glow.  People just naturally want to be around an enthusiastic person!


Titus 3:1 says “to be ready to do whatever is good.”  Be ready – be prepared.  Maybe you are not in the season of actually doing a certain good work, but you can be preparing for it.


And Titus 3:8 also says “those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.”  We are to devote ourselves to good works! Devote can mean dedicate.  This speaks to me of being focused, of single-minded dedication.


Three times this passage tells us to do good.  Not to earn salvation but because that is what redeemed people do – they do good to show their love for the Lord, to show gratitude.


The difference is, don’t do good in our own strength but let Him empower us to do good works.


Titus 3:8 These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.  This is the reward.  When Christians do good – everyone profits.  Think of the hospitals, orphanages and universities that Christians founded and supported.  Millions of lives are made better because someone was zealous to do good works.


And, many are drawn to Christ:
“Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” Phil. 2:14-15


We come full circle.  Your good works will make you stand out – you will shine like a light in a dark place, directing those who are seeking to Him. What possible purpose for your life could be higher than that?


You might say, "this is all well and good but I don’t know of a good deed that I can do."  That is the beauty part – seek Him and He will tell you what to do.  I know a lot of us have a love for the Lord and want to do something but just don’t know what.  I truly believe that if we dedicate ourselves to prayer – He will show us.  I’m not talking about a table-grace prayer or a now-I-lay-me-down-to sleep prayer but a concentrated effort to do battle in prayer until you know beyond a shadow of a doubt what He has for you.


Once you know, just do it!  Don't let anything stop you.

Wednesday Hodgepodge


1. What's your favorite meal to serve on a chilly autumn evening?
As soon as it gets cool, I start making chili.  We love to eat chili all fall and winter!

2. Are you a creature of habit? Explain.
Very much so.  I am such a creature of habit that when I am in a certain part of town, my van turns into the Walmart parking lot, even if I had no plans to go there!  Seriously!  One day I was on my way to the church accountant's and found myself in the Wal-mart parking lot - several blocks away.  Sad to say, that scenario has happened more than once.

3. What food product (no longer readily available) do you remember and miss from days gone by?
Blue Bell bologna was a staple in all the households in my family.  When it was discontinued, we were all very sad.  (I like to have bologna and cheese with crackers along with my chili!)  We have not found a comparable bologna to this day.

4. What's something you've lost that you've never been able to find? Any theories as to what happened?
When I was a kid, my mom let me borrow her class ring to wear and I lost it.  I felt terrible about it and it never has shown up to this day. I must have lost it at school.  Gee, thanks for reminding me.

5. Zoo~circus~ carnival...your favorite?
The zoo, I like to see all the animals, except for the reptiles and rodents.

6. What song makes you feel instantly happy?
Beach Boys - "Wish They All Could be California Girls."  I have no idea why, because I was a Florida girl, but that tune just gets me happy.

7. To what extent are you an argumentative person?
Not at all - I hate confrontation!

Why is it that life just seems better on a crisp sunny fall day? Just sayin'.
