Friday's Fave Five #159

Another whirlwind of a week flew by.  In the midst of life, Friday is a time I stop to reflect on the high points of my week.

1.  Vanilla Caramel Creamer - so comforting in my coffee!  Now that it's cooler weather, I'm enjoying hot beverages again.  It just feels soothing.

2.  Entertaining - I invited our Women's Ministry group to hold their meeting at my house on Monday.  This is another big step for me in "practicing hospitality."  It went very well and I enjoyed it.  I think they did, too.

3.  Family visiting - my brother-in-law was in town holding a revival.  We went to hear him preach and I always love to see him so excited and passionate about the Word of God.

4.  Quote of the Week:  Vision is something that is always on my mind, especially since I am in leadership at my church.  I am seeking the Lord for vision for our little church group, and also for myself.  Because of that, I really enjoyed this quote I ran across:

“A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.”  ~ Rosabeth Moss Kanter

I believe God calls us, and enables us, to be something more. I think He always calls us to be more than we think we can be.  The struggle to attain that calling is what makes us strong and reveals our talents and abilities.

5.  Posting - I do love to write, which is why I became a blogger.  I have to admit, though, when life gets busy, it's the first thing to fall by the wayside.  I managed to post three times this week, and that makes me happy!

10 Things I Would Do If I Didn't Have To Work

I subscribe to Mama Kat's Pretty Much World Famous Writer's Workshop and receive weekly prompts of ideas to spur myself on to create.  Most of the time, I don't follow through.  (Just bein' real.) This week, however, I decided to join in because one of her questions really resonated with me:  "What would you do if you didn't have to work?"  I'm taking this from the angle that working sucks up all my time, so what would I do if I had all that lovely time.  I work two jobs, so imagining adding an extra 50+ hours to my life is a wondermous thought! (Of course, you could look at her question from the position of  "If I didn't have to work, I must have lots of money, so what would I do with it."  I might address that question down the road.)

If I didn't have to work all the time, I could stay at home and never be bored.  There have been different seasons in my life where I did not work outside the home, even times when I stayed home and did not have any children and still kept busy and involved. It's beyond my understanding when people tell me they are bored.  Seriously?  When there is a plethora of things to be created, things to be learned, people to invest in, books to be read, plain old-fashioned work to be done (not for pay, just keeping up one's home), a beautiful world to explore, how can one be bored?

I thought it would be fun to do this in a top-ten list:
10.  I would organize more.  I love to organize - it's kind of a passion.  I have tons of books on the subject, and I love to find new organizational ideas and products on the internet.  My theory is, the more organized I am, the more freed-up I am which leaves more time for other things.

9. I would thrift more.  Going to yard sales, thrift stores and couponing appeals to me because I love to save money. Saving money allows me to buy more bargains.  Which necessitates more organizing. It's a cycle, people.

8.  Repurposing: I love to find stuff and make it useful in another way.  This also feeds into my thrifting and organizing addictions.  I also love to read blogs about said addictions.

7. I would make more time for people.  I'm always so busy that I don't take time to go visit friends or relatives.  This is an area that I'm sorely lacking in and really would love to change. After all, people are most important!

6. In that same vein, I would also entertain more.  I have never been good at inviting people to my home.  I always had some excuse.  Now that my house is totally remodeled, I'm trying to step up and practice hospitality more often. If I had extra time, I might become a party animal and have guests over all the time ... no, I wouldn't ... but I could do it way more often.

5.  I love to go on roadtrips and take photos of nature.  If I didn't work, I would have lots more time to use my camera.  I'd also take a photography class.  Just because I want to!

4.  I'd also get caught up on scrapbooking.  I have enough supplies and photos to create a hundred albums.  All I need is time to do it. I think scrapbooks are a wonderful treasure to hand down to future family members.  (Of course, I'd have to journal in them as well so they'd know what they were seeing.)

3. Write!  Blog posts, articles, memories, even writing a book would fill a lot of my time that I used to spend working.

2. Read.  I have an insatiable appetite for reading.  If I weren't working, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would carve out time for reading good books (possibly lying in a hammock).  Like every day.  It's just how I roll.

And the #1 thing I would do if I didn't have to work would be to study God's word.  There is nothing you can do that would profit you more.  God is #1 in my life and studying His Word would always be a priority.

The above list doesn't even include other goals and plans for the future - like dreams of actually making myself exercise, learning landscaping, learning Spanish, becoming a violinist, traveling the continent, and my dream of going to Prince Edward Island.  Bored?  Never!

This World Is Not My Home, So What Am I Supposed To Do?

The following is Part One of my latest bible lesson:

Twilight Zone, X-Files, Sci Fi channel, Roswell, NM, Star Trek, E.T. … back in the day, Mork and Mindy, and going way back, My Favorite Martian; all ideas dreamed up by those fascinated with aliens.  Yet the truth is, we are surrounded in everyday life by aliens.

In fact, I’m an alien and I’m guessing I'm not alone.  No, I’m not off my rocker, I’m talking about Christians – Christians are aliens.  Don’t believe me?

"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light". 1 Peter 2:9

"These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.  For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.  And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.  But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city." Hebrews 11: 13-16

Peculiar people, strangers and pilgrims on the earth – in other words, they don’t belong here!  I’d call that an alien.

Webster defines an alien as “relating, belonging, or owing allegiance to another country or government” and “differing in nature or character typically to the point of incompatibility.”

We are citizens of heaven, and our character, as it becomes more and more like Jesus, differs from the world, so much so that we should become incompatible.

And now we come to my main text:

Let’s look at Titus 2:11-15  For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.  It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,  while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.  These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

And Titus 3:1-8 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone. At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.  But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,  he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

The title of my message is “This World is Not My Home So What Am I Supposed To Do?”   This message has two points:  1) we are aliens – citizens of heaven; 2) we are created to do good works.

Aliens look funny – Hopefully, we don’t look like the world (it’s good to dress modestly but don’t let it make us judgmental.) We should have the joy of Christ on our faces, looking expectant and hopeful – not all down and out, faces looking like they are weaned on a pickle.

We don’t act like the world, The Message version says it’s a godless, indulgent life that the world leads. What are some things that Christians do that the world doesn’t? (putting others first, turning our cheek when struck, not suing, trusting God to avenge … etc)

Aliens talk funny – if we are talking extraterrestrial, we always imagine that aliens talk like robots.  If we mean a non-resident alien, such as from another country, we always find that they have an accent, their phrasing is different than ours, and they don’t understand our slang, and vice versa.

Christians should talk differently from the world, too.  First of all, we “slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone. “ Titus 3:2   We are not to be gossipers, we don’t tell lies on everyone, we are gentle and considerate to people – we don’t cuss them out.  Filthy words do not come out of our mouths!  Oh, that ought to set us apart from the world right there – have you ever heard the amount of filthy talk that comes out of everyone’s mouths, men, women and children of all ages alike! This should not be so of God's people.

Aliens are  thought to have higher intelligence, after all if they come from another planet and have figured out how to come here, they must be smart!  – 1 Cor. 2:16 tells us we have the mind of Christ! We don’t think like the world thinks.  The world teaches us to exalt self, we believe we are to exalt Christ! The world focuses on getting ahead, making a dollar, amassing the most property before their time on earth is over.  The believer focuses on his real home and laying up treasures in heaven..

Have I convinced you yet that we are aliens?

Friday's Fave Five #158

I'm a little late today on participating and will post this on my lunch hour, but I wanted to join in on posting my 5 highlights from my week.

1. Saturday, we took another drive and ended up near the river.

.
It was soooo relaxing to just sit and talk and watch the boats traveling the Ohio.

2.  I have long-expressed my love of all things dishes and table linens.  Here is picture of my table with some of my treasures:

Everything on the table is from thrift stores or yard sales except for the bowl holding the golden fruit.  That bowl was purchased at Hobby Lobby at 90% off! The fruit was found at an antique store.

Thrifty treasures - certainly a highlight!

3.  Sunday, I made this awesome blueberry banana bread from a recipe that I found in blogland. Visit Lattenene's Cup of Chat here to use this fab recipe.

4.  Monday, we had dinner guests come over.  Hospitality is an area that I am trying to improve upon.  We had a delightful young couple from church come over to share a meal and we had a great time.  I've learned a meal doesn't have to be fancy to bless others.

5. Wednesday was my turn to present the bible lesson at our church.  I really enjoyed studying this passage of scripture this week, Titus 2:11-3:8..  Next week, I'll publish my study in my Standing on the Word series.  Look for it under "This World is Not My Home, So What Am I Supposed To Do."

Friday's Fave Five #157

Oh my!  Just like that, it's Friday already!  Today is a busy day, no time to load any pictures, but I want to take 5 minutes to jot down 5 highlights this week for which I am thankful.

1.  Sunday, we had a wonderful time of praise and worship in both services.  Experiencing the presence of the Lord is such an awesome thing - it is definitely one of my favorite times.

2.  I ordered a skirt online and it actually fit!  I'm always leery of online shopping but I guess if you buy a brand you're used to buying the fit might work out.

3.  You knew I was going to say it:  cooler weather is definitely a favorite and this week was great.  I actually can use some of my cardigans and shrugs now!  Yay!

4.  I've been listening to my favorite praise and worship music this week, Terry MacAlmon's Live Worship.  To me, it is simply the best praise CD ever!

5.  This might sound crazy, but I'm thankful for all the work I have right now.  It's been a busy week filled with projects and meetings for both churches along with all the things I do as wife, mother, homemaker, music leader, board member and so on and so on ....  It's great to feel needed and God has given me a renewed sense of purpose.

Also, as a bonus, let me share a great portion of scripture for you to look up:  Titus 2:11-15 and Titus 3:1-8.  Good stuff!  It's really got me motivated ...

Simple Pleasures - A Well Made Bed

I understand that there are those who feel making a bed each day is a waste of time.  "Why go to all that trouble when you're just going to get back in it," they reason.

Maybe it's just me, but it just does something for me to see a bed with pretty linens all smooth, pillows plumped and ready for me to plop in.  A tangled mess of sheets never makes me feel good about climbing in bed.

Often when I come home from work and go into my bedroom to change clothes, I'll glance longingly at my bed.  It looks so inviting!  I want to just slide on top of that comforter and have a little shut-eye time. It's just a simple pleasure ....

Fall Hodgepodge

1. What do you do at the first sign of a cold? Will you get a flu shot this year? At the first sign of a cold, I like to use Alka Seltzer's Cold Formula in Citrus flavor.  This year, I've also added taking a daily Zyrtec to my morning routine.  I think that I have more allergy problems than colds.

No, I will not be getting a flu shot.  I never do.  I feel that most of the time the flu shot they give you would not be able to fight the strain of flu virus going around.  Plus, I don't like the idea of putting flu virus in my body on purpose!

2. What advice can you give about how to conquer fear? Whenever I am afraid, I go to God's Word to remind myself that my life is in His hands.  He will help me through anything that comes my way.  I love to read Psalms 91 when feeling fearful, and also this verse especially comforts me:

"God hath not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind."  2 Timothy 1:7

If I'm afraid, it's because satan is trying to make me afraid, it's not God doing it!

3. Share two good things about your life right now. It's hard to just pick two!  I'd have to say that right now I am most excited that our house remodel is done!  Also, another good thing is that recently we have had some awesome worship services at church.  I always feel great after one of those!

4. A hot fall fashion trend in 2011 is a return to sixties style...tunics with pants, shift dresses, pencil skirts, cinched waists, bold prints, high necklines and short lengths to name a few. How does this fashion trend fit with your wardrobe and personal sense of style?
I won't be wearing short lengths, that's for sure.  The idea of higher necklines is nice, because I'm so tired of having to wear camis under everything!  The blouses nowadays are so low-cut.  The shift dress might be a good style for me ...

5. Were you involved in scouting as a kid? How about as an adult?
Yes, I was a brownie and a girl scout until about the 6th grade.  My girls were girl scouts for a little while, but as I believe someone, I think it was Karen from Karen's Korner, said, scouting requires a big time commitment from the girl AND her parent!  Also, we suck at cookie sales .... just sayin'

6. Apple, pear, plum, pumpkin...your favorite fall flavor? Love them all, but my family does not like pumpkin, so I have to get my fix elsewhere.  I totally love pumpkin roll with the cream cheese filling.

7. What characteristics do you think are essential in a good teacher?
You have to have a heart for kids!  Also, you have to be a hard worker and organized.  My daughter is a high school math teacher, and believe me, it's no picnic!

8. Insert your own random thought here.I love this time of year!  What is it about cooler weather that just makes me feel more energetic?

Daybook - September 13, 2011

FOR TODAY, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13

Outside my window...a hibiscus flower is about to bloom.  Soon there will be no more flowers ....

I am thinking... that I would really love to have a long fall season this year ...

I am thankful...for the wonderful life the Lord has allowed me to have!  A husband who loves me, healthy children, a challenging job that I feel was made for me, a church to work in that uses my talents and abilities, and stretches me, dreams and goals for the future.  I am blessed!

In the kitchen...meatloaf and I'm thinking of trying a new recipe for blueberry banana bread.

I am wearing...gray dress pants and a gray and turquoise print top.

I am creating...with the help of God, a wonderful life.

I am going...straight home after work.  Home is my haven!

I am wondering... why so many of us today are so undisciplined.  America was built by hardworking folks who knew the value of discipline.  How did we fail to pass this value down?  I know in my own life I really have to work hard to discipline myself.  The easy way looks so attractive!

I am reading... "Wolfsbane" by Ronie Kendig.  I don't know why I love fiction about special ops groups, Navy seals, CIA and FBI heroes so much ...

I am hoping...and praying to see more young couples come into our church.

I am looking forward to... dinner guests that will be coming next week.  I'm trying to learn how to "practice hospitality."

I am hearing..."Live Worship" album by Terry MacAlmon.  It's my favorite praise and worship music!

Around the house... contentment.

I am pondering... how important praise is to God.  His word says He inhabits the praises of His people.  We build a dwelling place for Him with our praise.  It's so important praise and worship have prominence in our services.

One of my favorite things... candlelight.  Soon, it will be the season to burn candles!

A few plans for the rest of the week: some intensive study on Psalm 7, getting ready for a board meeting and some longtime dreaded filing of sheet music. (As much as I love to organize, filing is my most hated chore.... well, next to cleaning out the refrigerator!)

Here is a picture for thought I am sharing...

One of my favorite spots - the shoreline of a lake.

Friday's Fave Five #156

Hello!  Welcome to this Friday's Five Fave, a time when I stop and look back and reflect on five highlights of the past week.  This fun concept was the brainchild of Susanne, at Living to Tell the Story.  Visit her blog to participate!

1.  Cooler weather:  I love cool weather and temps around 75° are my idea of what temperature in heaven will be like.  We've been experiencing heavenly days this week, so I chose to use the fall button for FFF in honor of the upcoming season.

2. Mini road trip: My hubby and I took a few hours on Labor Day to go for a short road trip.  We visited a small town in Southern Illinois.  I came upon this neat old building with ivy growing on it.  I don't know why, but I love old ivy-covered buildings. I also love the architectural detail of this building - bay windows are a favorite of mine.  Our first home had a bay window ...

Next, we toured a State Park.  Let me just take a moment to applaud our country for making so many State Parks available.  It bothers me when I go to one and there are hardly any people there.  If we don't take advantage of the resources available to us, will parks and recreation departments be cut out of all governmental budgets?

I love the serene feel of this place - water and plenty of trees, what more could you want?

3.  I had previously shared about some new furniture that we had finally gotten delivered.  This week, and every week,  I have really enjoyed the new look of our home.

It's difficult to photograph since our bedroom is so small and our furniture so massive, but here is a shot showing my new comforter. I love the calming gray and white colors with a pop of my favorite burgundy.  You may be able to see one of my beloved shutters on the side of the curtains, and my mother-in-law's Dahlia quilt hanging from the quilt rack.

Here is our new triple dresser.  I love this piece!  I wish you could see how the silver drawer pulls sparkle in the light.  My favorite yard sale lamp and decorative plate look really good in this room against the soft gray walls.

Below is pictured our new reclining sofa in chocolate brown.  I've been relaxing here in the evenings using my laptop.  It's a great way to end the day! Since the photo was taken, I've gotten the perfect brown and cream zebra pillows to put on the sofa.  Now I plan to get a matching zebra area rug in front of the couch.

I love the bed we got for our daughter's room.  Love the tall white headboard!  I'm jealous that I can't manage to fit one of these into our room ...

4.  New hairdo - My hairdresser had to be out of town and my appointment was rescheduled.  By the time I  was able to get there, my hair looked awful.  When I emerged from the salon, I felt soooo much better. Nothing like good hair to help with the self-image!

5. Quote of the week:

"
You have the ability, with your words, to make a person stronger. Your words are to their soul what a vitamin is to their body. Max Lucado"

This makes me think of the scripture,

"
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer." Psalm 19:14

Help me to build up people with my words!

Thus sums up my week.  I'm looking forward to the weekend and all that God has in store for me.
